Hello from WI and an Ex-IT Guy

Hello all,

After a 3rd layoff in about 5 years in my niche IT specialty, I decided to change gears. My family has insurance in their blood but I tried to follow my own path. Didn't work out so I am wending back to the family roots. Sadly, they might not think I am serious due to my deep IT history, so I've had to do it all on my own. Slowly they are starting to see it, but it has been a difficult conversion (my brain is all 0s and 1s).

Aimed for Senior Specialist, so got my health and life licensing, LLCd, licensed the LLC, got a nice FMO that is family recommended. Appointed with UHC and Humana. I've been unable to make a sale in the 2+ months I've been trying to prospect as I've got no budget to spend on advertising. I am here to fix that with ideas.

I'll see you in the forums!

Congratulations on making the transition to insurance, this is a great industry and can be a great career. However with that being said, maybe someone needs to sit you down and have a reality check with you. Two statements that are just reflags to me are "I've got no budget to spend on advertising" and "I got a nice FMO". but "have not sold anything for 2+ months". Let me address both of those statements.

Two of the main reasons new agents fail in this business is that they come into this business under capitalized, meaning they do not have enough $ to carry them until they start having adequate commissions come in (which seems to be your case) They have not put together a business plan as to how much they are going to need to spend on leads, advertising, travel, etc. so they do not know what their operating costs will be. They think they can be successful on a shoestring budget or no budget at all and are looking for that "magic bean" or piece of information that will catapult them into success.

The second reason they fail is that they are not trained properly (which seems to be you also) and thrown to the wolves. Basically they have no clue what they are doing. If you are saying you have a "good FMO" recommended by family, why have they let you flounder for 2+ months? Have you been proactive in asking for their help and guidance? If not shame on you. If so and they are not willing to give it, find another FMO that will, there are a lot of good FMO's that work in your space here on the Forum. Best of Luck and hope that you find success.

Thanks Johndf,

Yes, I am aware of the statistics and being undercapitalized. I thought it would be a quicker start towards converting prospects. Thank you for the post of reality.

What part of Wisconsin are you in? Are you going to be selling MAPD? How are you currently prospecting? How are you surviving with no income from lack of sales?

So many questions!

hey FRJ,

I am working off of savings so been living modestly. My prospecting seems at risk of being non compliant with CMS so changing gears.
