Hello,

I was in NYC and was a victim of a hit and run (only car damage, thank goodness). Police stopped the car a few blocks away. Police report filed, and I got a copy, but the insurance company is not listed, only the policy number. The other car belongs to a electric company and when I called the number the guy said their insurance was Geico but going on their website to file a claim the policy number was not recognized. I called back but no one responds anymore.

Can anyone help identify this?

Policy Number is: 910006836005

Thank you!

Call the other party and get the information over the phone. Call the officer who wrote the report and tell them that you are not getting anywhere with the at fault party. Call your own carrier and let your claims department handle it (so long as you have collision on your car, otherwise they may not help you with the claim)

This is why I buy liability, uninsured motorists, medical payments, and physical damage auto insurance. If I have a claim, I report it to my insurer and let them handle it. They have far more experience, resources, and clout than I do as an individual.

Yes I have all that but why would I make a claim under my name? It still stays on your record and even though ins co is not supposed to use it I don't believe that they don't. I had a hit and run about 10 years ago and when I got my auto ins report from CLUE it had it on there.

Anyway, appreciate your help. It turns out it WAS Geico. For those of you that don't know:

GEICO commercial a whole separate process. You can't start or manage a claim on the website. You have to get connected to a special department. After quite a bit of hassle, I got to the right place and was able to file the claim

If you choose not to involve your own insurance company, you're at the mercy of what the other insurance company is willing to pay for. Good luck with that. I've never had an auto insurer that charged me for a non-at-fault claim. i also have coverage for OEM repair parts. You can no such contractual leverage when dealing with someone else's insurance company.

Because that is what you are paying your carrier for. Yes, the accident would show on an MVR but not at fault accidents do not affect your premium. It will be able to be seen for 5 years as part of the CLUE report. Best of luck if you are handling this on your own with Geico Commercial.

Fair enough. I've had a few accidents that were not at fault where I dealt succesfuly with the ins co (it was minor damage). I will keep you advice in mind to be careful though as it sounds like you've had or heard about bad experience with Geico Commercial.

Fighting a commercial carrier can be a real pain. Some companies, the insured, can be a real treat. Expect a delay or two

Yes this is accurate. Insurance Companies hate writing checks. Like everything else in America. I actually got sued once because cop ruled the accident my fault for not used a blinker "in-time" and my insurance company wanted 50/50 blame and actually told the other the parties insurance company and his attorney that they thought he had an opportunity to avoid the collision and was also negligent on his part. His insurance company came back wanted me at 70% fault, my company came back with 60% and his company wouldn't agree so they just dropped the claim and I got sued.
