How Did You Start Out?

Share with the others that are new how you started in the insurance business. Why did you choose your company? What did you do for marketing/lead generation? What kind of training did your company offer or did you receive? How long did it take to actually start making money (being profitable)? Share! Thank you.

You asked too many questions in one post. I wish someone volunteer for the answers.

Maybe I'm being cynical today, but it seems everyone is asking questions to get answers to go write a book, not answers to their real issues.

But hey, I'll take a stab at this.....

One of the things that I realized early on is that if I did what everyone else did, I wouldn't stand out from the crowd. So I got busy and tried some new things.

I was profitable in month 2. Been profitable every month since, except 1 I think. Doesn't mean I always make what I want, but as a business, I do okay.

As I grew a bit, I suddenly realized what I knew instinctively upfront was bogus. Doing something new was just a rehashing of things people have tried and failed miserably at. They might work for a while, but a lot of the old try'd and true systems work better and for the long term.

As I'm a P&C agent, the single most important thing is to realize this is a retention business. You need to take care of your clients and treat them well. If you do this, everything else will come.

Try an find a mentor you look up to and falllow him as long as he will allow. This way you can learn to prospect (for him) then you learn how to sell watching him. And as long as you negotiate a fari split you will be ok if your mentor is strong and you do what he tells you.
Thats what I did and it worked out well for me as well as other agents i know that did the same.

Good Luck

I started captive, with no experience, in the senior market with what was one of the best companies at the time for Med Supps.

Training was promised and not given. Same with leads.

I was handed a voter registration list, the promised leads, and a stack of apps. I made a little over $1,800 the first month. I was taking a 12 month advance at the time. It was all profit except for what I spent on gas.

I still generate my own leads.
