How Do You Deal With Referrals?

I am considering working in the Final Expense area in about nine months after I can take early retirement from teaching. I have learned a great deal from the forum and thank all of you for your contributions.

I am wondering how you deal with referrals from leads especially if they are in an area not particularly close to your home. Do you send them a letter and then call? Do you call them when you are in the area the day you get the referral or wait until you are there again? Thanks for any help.

IMO if the referral is HOT (ready to buy, says that they have no FE and wants to get some, etc.). Make the connection, set the appointment and meet them. Some times they will drive to meet you, like out of state or a greater distance than you normally work. Will meet at referring customers house. Or close enough for you to make the house call.

Other referrals are at your discretion. But don't fail to contact and find their hot button. Most are the easiest sale to make.

If you choose FE, best wishes.

Call them yesterday.

How far is to far? Only you you can decide that. 3 hour drive for $1,000.00? $600? A phone call can determine if you need to drive it. As a new agent I would call the same day and drive if I double cost. Many referrals lead to other referrals.

Frankly, most agents struggle to get referrals to begin with so for good or bad, you probably aren't going to have this come up.

As has already been pointed out, referrals are usually a very good lead and can then lead to more referrals. There is no harm in calling them and qualifying them before you go rather than just handing it off to someone. If they know why you're coming, have a friend that did business with you, and want you to come over, there is no reason to not drive outside of the area "particularly close to your home". Letters don't work nearly as well as phone calls, so just pick up the phone.
