How Do You Pick the Right Company to Go With?

So I am new to the insurance business. I passed my life, health and sickness exam a month ago and started with a compnay that I went through and researched. They were fairly new in ga but had been in SC for a few years.

I dhave worked hard, sold a good bit (medicare supps and advantage plans) an I have busted my butt and worked hard learning, selling, etc. However, they have not done what they said they would and I have yet to even get paid. Not even the weekly training fee that they had promised.

I am looking to go with another company in the health market arena but now I am scared I am going to choose the wrong one. Even though I did research I still feel like I am getting the run around.

How do you find the right one for you? I feel like this will be a good business for me to be in - and so far have really enjoyed it and have a knack for it so to speak. But I havent found the right company. :(

Any advice for a newbie?:skeptical:

What market do you want to focus on?

Do you want to stay with the senior market?

Have you thought about going independent?

It's not hard and you make a lot more money.

You can get pretty high contracts if you want to go that route.

Leads are not so hard to get either ...

I personally went with Life (final expense) to start out ... it's an easy product to learn and sell and there is large demand for it. It goes well with Med sups ... you can cross sell either.

Anyway, if I can help, let me know.

I would like to stay with the senior market. I seem to do well with it and it suits me. I am a talker and they love to talk! LOL

I am not sure what Final expense is but I will check out your site.

I have thought about going independant but didnt know how hard it would be or where to start. Kind of why I was asking for advice. I am a hard worker, dont mind cold calling or working long hours so I am determined to succeed :)

Thanks!

Yeah, if you don't mind cold calling then scrap the captive venue ...

All Captive companies provide is some training and leads ... and moral support.

But if you don't mind sitting on the phone and calling ... then you will do great!!!

I would use callfire or mojo for your cold calling ... it speed dials for you and helps you keep track of your calls ... good stuff.

If you have the balls to do it, then go independent ... this forum is a great resource and guys will bust down your door to help you.

I am new to the business and looking at this side of insurance. You mentioned leads being not that hard to get...where do you get your leads? Also who would you advise to sign up with for products?

If you want to stay in the senior market and sell Med Supps it is going to be imperative that you be an independent agent and have the ability to represent several different insurance companies. The Med Supp market is changing all the time, premium increases, and you are going to have to have the flexibility to always represent the most competitive companies.

Going independent is not as scary as it may initially seem especially to sell Med Supps. It is obvious that if you stay where you are you are not going to get any help or support.

Simply moving to another company is not going to remedy that situation. The new company will probably also blow smoke at you saying the same thing.

I have worked with a lot of agents new to the business who started as an independent agent and after a short learning curve are doing very well being on their own. It really isn't rocket science.

I don't buy "leads". Jody is right, they are very easy to get if you are willing and able to pay the cost, however, I don't find them very productive for selling Med Supps. I have run every kind of lead there is and it is far more effective for me to generate my own Med Supp leads.

I will be happy to talk to you and answer your questions. Give me a call anytime, I always have time to talk to other agents.

Go independent! You can still get appointed with good major companies and provide real help to your clients by being able to offer them different carrier to match their needs. Jody is a good guy to work with he really helped me out. Hate to sound like such a mark for Jody but he got me going in the direction I wanted to go. But there is lots of good posts from independent agents in this forum, I would do research in a how to be independent then just one good captive company. But everyone is different, do what you are comfortable with. Hope you have success!

Is there really such a thing as independent if you're contracting under someone else?

I'm direct with the carriers for health but it doesn't seem like that's what you're talking about here.

Not to Jack the thread but this is a excellent question?

Are you really independent?:err:

There are three things that define independence, if you ask me:

1. Are you restricted in ANY way as to what products you can write?

2. If you want to move your contracts to another FMO/IMO/upline/whatever right away, can you do so?

3. Do you own your own business (you're listed as the agent on every app, if you leave your upline you retain all of your clients, and you don't have a non-compete)?

If it's yes to all three, then I call that independent no matter how many hands are in the upline.
