How To Stay "In The Loop" if You're Semi-Retired?

Hello Insurance Colleagues!

The agency I had been affiliated with for 15 years, shut down in 2016 due to the owner's death.

I'm pretty much semi-retired now, as I near age 60. Writing health and life business as it comes my way, mostly via referrals, or during small talk with strangers.

But, I am falling behind in knowing what the current trends are in life/health, and also what's happening in our screwy Illinois market.

I signed up with a local agency late in 2018 and got up-to-speed very quickly. But giving up 30% of my commission, along with being hounded/checked-on by the Sales Manager assigned to me, made that relationship a short one.

Posts by members to this Insurance Forum have proven to be invaluable in providing the big picture of what's happening in our industry. (Thanks to all!)

But I'd like to know what is the best avenue for staying in touch with state/local health and life insurance trends?? Any helpful advice is appreciated!

Allen, you could associate with an IMO that doesn't give such a strong commission shave. I am also semi retired (some would say that should be semi retarded) and I have several agents with whom I have cultivated a friendship based relationship. That is a good way to stay up to date. Also, subscribe to industry magazines and read the Forum news columns not just the forums.. Enjoy your retirement.

You've been in the business long enough that you don't need to give up your commissions for handholding.

Their are plenty of FMO's that give street commissions or better, while "keeping you in the loop".

As Rouse said, read the Forum and you'll keep up with the times.

New Horizon is decent. So is Trkingim.com (Todd)

Todd and Matt are really decent about not being pushy about production and keeping people up to date.

New Horizon does a good job of the same, including notification of rate increases.

Both do street level.

I do small bits of business, basically all inbound, as I build out my website and push digital marketing.

The much larger BGA's (think Crump, Ash, Precision Senior Marketing, etc) will send you carrier news and state availability updates just for registering to use their site.
