Idea for Getting Life Insurance Leads

I have been thinking about a way to generate life insurance leads and I'm interested in your opinions on if this would work.

To me, the #1 reason why someone would get life insurance is because they had a baby and it's their first baby.

There are several dozen companies that sell lists of people that just had a baby. Most people that buy these lists are buying them because they sell baby stuff.

I'm guessing that if you've just had your first baby, you're not immediately thinking "Wow, I need some life insurance". That thought probably crosses your mind about 3 months after you have the baby.

If you went to those list companies and asked them for a list in your selling area for people who had a baby that was their first, 3 months prior, and you asked them to match it against the national do not call list, then did a direct mail campaign to 100 per week, and then made phone calls 3 days after you sent the letter following up on trying to set an appointment, do you think this would work ?

Is this a good approach ? AND what other ways are people generating interest for life insurance ?

It couldn't hurt....whats interesting is that I've had 2 children one is 3 1/2 and the second will be 1 on the 11th is that the hospital where I live gives out a bag with lots of goodies inside (actually offers and some helpful info) which includes the Gerber Grow Up plan to insure the children when coverage on the parents might be a better idea...Has anyone approached a hospital about seeing what it takes to add something to this goodie bag...I'm thinking I would probably be turned down if I want to add some sort of ad to it. I want to think about the approach because it might be a one time chance to pitch this per hospital and here in Maine we are not rolling in hospitals.

Those bag programs are usually administered by a third party. The technical term for advertising in those bags is called Insert Media.

Insert Media comes in all different forms. Blow-ins, polly bags, FSI's etc ...

Blow-ins = Those things that fall out of magazines that offer subscriptions to other magazines

Polly bags = sealed plastic bags with goodies in them, like those card decks.

FSI = Free Standing Inserts, those things at the doctors office where you can tear off a card and leave with it.

There are dozens of others. All of those advertising mediums, even the hospital bags are just like billboards. There is a company that owns that space, i.e. that bag. And they view it as a billboard and they hire a company to sell space in that bag.

So yes, you can get in that bag, but more than likely you need to find out who provides that bag to the hospital and talk to them about getting inside of it.

OR, be the bag. i.e. put together your own bag, and negotiate with other advertisers to get in your bag and that will offset your costs or even pay for the whole thing and throw off cash for you.

Has anyone on the forum ever gotten a piece into the bag and was it worth the hassle. I think squeed might have an idea about waiting a couple of months...I remember coming home from the hospital after having our first child and dragging all the cr*p (gifts) home and dumping it on the floor, I was going through the stuff a couple of days later and found a sandwich my parents had brought to me when we where in the hospital....I was a zombie for a time.

Hi Squeed,
Before you lay out the investment to rent a list that fulfills all those criteria, and then send out a letter do you think it might be a good idea to think more about the #1 reason new parents are going to buy life insurance for their baby?

Most new parents don't want to think about life insurance for their baby because that means they have to face their biggest fear... their baby could die!

And then you want to send a letter to ask these new parents to meet with you to talk about something they don't even want to think about EVER?

Wow, that doesn't sound like the best plan to me.

What does that new parent want?

A little research could help you find the answer to that question.

Perhaps the reality of college is hitting home?

Perhaps they want to give their child a leg up on life?

Perhaps they'd be open to some ideas for how a small investment starting today could transform into a big advantage when their baby becomes an adult?
