IEP Election Expiration

Hello All,

Thank you in advance for any assistance or knowledge your can share with my question.

I'm assisting a Client who is New to Medicare, and already enrolled in Part B effective June 1.

Due to her Husband Retirement benefits she will have creditable RX coverage so she has chosen to enroll in a MA only effective June 1.

We completed the enrollment a few weeks ago and she has already received ID Cards and the Member Kit effective June 1, with Carrier A.

After further thoughts she now wishes to enroll with another Carrier's MA only plan.

Am I correct in saying that because she has yet to become effective with Carrier A she stills has the opportunity to change Carriers and she had not expired her IEP Election.

Once Again your Knowledge, experiences, and comments are GREATLY appreciated.

Nate

It doesn't matter whether or not the new plan is effective yet. She can change as amny times as she wants during the IEP. She will be in the last one she enrolled in when the IEP ends.

She doesn't want a med sup while she can get one with no medical questions?

I agree with jdeasy EXCEPT it's important to note that a prospect can change their plan as many times as they'd like in the three months before their Medicare becomes effective, but once they a plan actually goes effective (June 1st in your situation) then they're locked into it. In this situation it's a distinction without a difference, but it's not unlimited changes through the IEP (IEP being 3 months prior, month of, and 3 months after). By enrolling in a plan in June she's stuck and won't have the additional 3 months after. A bit redundant, but hopefully that makes this perfectly clear.

During the First year on MA, she has the option to go back to Original Medicare and get a supplement and drug plan if she is not satisfied with MA.

I have a stumper.

Guy on disability took an MAPD in December 2009. Turns 65 in July and wants a Med Sup but no drug plan because he gets all drugs from the VA. Does he have the option to DROP all drug coverage at his 65th birthday.

VA drug coverage is considered credible coverage and Part D is not needed.

That doesn't answer his question.

The guy is stuck until AEP. His IEP was when he first became eligible for Medicare which at this point has come and gone.

VA drug coverage.........Part D is not needed.

Maybe , maybe not.
The VA is pretty tight on what Rx's vets can receive. If the vet is only taking generic's, then "yes", Part D not needed.
I have about 20 Vets that use the VA and also have a Part D card.

I have both VA and Part D for myself. I am not saying that one should not have Part D if they have VA coverage. It is true that the VA can be tough when it comes to Brand Name vs Generic. They have certain parameters that they apply when it comes to eligibility for certain medications, particularly Brand Name (expensive).

Turning 65 will not give him an SEP to drop the PDP. He can return to original medicare and must pick up a PDP. He could then get the med sup. He would have to keep the pdp until Dec. 31.
