I know some medical insurance companies, such as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, are carving out their mental health and substance abuse benefits to specialized MH/SA companies like New Directions Behavioral Health and Magellan. Does anyone know of other health insurance companies doing this and who they are carving out to? If so, do you ahve any links to articles or websites? We're doing research on the issue at my office and are having a hard time finding anything. Any help would be appreciated.

Haven't seen it but makes sense. They do the same thing with Rx benefits, farming out to a PBM

The big two here are:

UBH
MHN

UBH is definitely the largest.

It's pretty standard to subcontract mental health benefits, same with Rx benefits (PBM).

Most carriers don't want to have to set up and negotiate contracts with MFCCs, Therapists, Counselors and so on. It's easier to tap into the third party existing network.

I have yet to see a carrier network for mental health come close to the UBH or MHN networks. That's why they rent them.

Very few carriers cover outpatient mental health in PA. UPMC and Health America/Coventy do cover outpatient mental health on a limited basis. Absolutely amazing how many people suffer with Mental health issues.. its staggering.
