Insurance Virgin Here

Now that I got your attention...

Anyway, I am a 25 y/o female from Florida that is a recent college graduate... and I am also another "victim" of the economy. (Unable to get a job)

I was chatting with my dad on the phone recently (He got laid off and hasn't been able to get a job in almost a year - and he has a Masters!) and he talked about a job fair he went to recently. He talked with an agent with Farmers Insurance about becoming an agent for them, and dad thought it was a great idea - for me. He said he would do it, but he's too old to get started with something like that.

I've always wanted to start my own business, but lack the serious funds to do so. I've done a little research and insurance might be a ideal compromise for me - even if I am a bit concerned since it always seems like insurance is a bit of a saturated market in my eyes. However in a sense I do like it because it sounds like I could be in business for myself but I don't need an insane amount of capital to do it. I've also browsed around some of the topics on here and seem to get conflicting information from people. (I do know to stay away from Farmers though! State Farm too because they are kind of in trouble here in FL at the moment...)

I do have about 4 years of sales experience. I use to work at Disney selling vacation packages and the like over the phone, and I did great at it. (Always around the top fifteen percent in sales I'd say) So I am comfortable selling... but those were all from people calling me. I've never cold-called or met people in person to sell to them, so that kind of worries me. I do like talking with people though.

I'm leaning more toward the health (and maybe life) insurance aspect of things... with possibly picking up auto/homeowners if things were to take off. For a bit of a niche since I am a pet lover at heart, I thought about adding pet insurance too since people love their fur babies!

I guess any advice would be appreciated - again I've done a search on some older topics, but there is a lot that has been said that it can be a bit confusing! Also has anyone started out by simply skipping being a captive agent and gone right for being independent? I'd love to hear your stories!

(p.s. I just realized I probably put this in the wrong spot - d'oh! Feel free to move or delete. >/)

Welcome to the forum. If I can help you with anything, just let me know. Best thing to do on the forum is just to ask questions and someone will give you an answer.

You can call me at 877-968-5757 or email me and I will try and show you a couple of good ideas and niches that might help you.

Don't reinvent the wheel. Find other successful agents, and copy what they are doing.

I recommend that all new agents at least talk to 10 other successful agents and pick their brains. Also at least talk to 5 different IMO's and see what each can offer you.

I am also 25 and my husband and I own two captive agencies in Texas. We are with Allstate and sell auto, home, life, etc. Pretty much anything except certain types of commercial and health. If you have no experience in insurance, I would suggest working for agency first to see if you like it. Otherwise you would be investing a lot of time and money into something you may not like. Most captive agencies (allstate, state farm, etc) do require you to have capital to get started. With Allstate agent can sell their books of business and you could have the opportunity to walk into a business that is already established. Just depends on what you are looking for. Talk to lots of agents and companies before making a decision. There is a lot out there. Let me know if you have other questions and I'd be happy to help you out!

Lots of good advice on this forum. Just make sure that the person you talk to does NOT have an agenda...ie pushing their own products instead of helping you.

The vast majority do not fall into that category.

A bit of advice..use this forum and all of the great content. But...also, find someone local to you that is experienced, knowledigible and respected.
