Jobless Disabled Veteran with Job Questions

Good Morning everyone. My name is Nick and I have a couple questions about finding employment. A quick background on me I was in the Air Force for the last 14 years as a Military Police Criminal Investigator and was medically separated in October for an injury sustained while on Active Duty. Since becoming a civilian I have had the worst experience finding a job in my field of work. Because of my injury I cannot pursue a career in Law Enforcement (because of the physical demand) where all of my experience is at so I have been looking for Investigator jobs in the field of Insurance fraud and cannot find any . Can anyone point me in the right direction? I know there has to be a large demand for investigators due to all of the fraud which occurs. I am HIGHLY qualified with a stellar career and track record. Any help being pointed in the right direction would be very appreciated. Thanks and have a great day.

It is in demand, here's the downside: investigators are pretty common. Most insurance fraud investigators basically sit in front of the houses of guys claiming their back was hurt and watch to see if they're splitting wood in the back yard. I don't know the details about your physical injury (nor is it necessarily relevant), but you have to be in reasonable good shape to do surveillance which is where a lot of the work is available.

The best way to "get started" would be to call up PI firms and look for a job. Most states require some type of licensing. Most PI firms have a rough time keeping steady work so they'll have a bunch of part-time folks and the more reliable you are the more likely you are to get more work. There might be other ways to get started, but that would probably get you in the right direction the fastest.

Thanks for you service to our country! Sorry for your disability! Good luck and I hope meaningful advice is offered. Josh makes sense to me.

Hi Nick
The best thing to do is apply at your state insurance commissioner's office. We definitely can use a person who can investigate all the fraud that is going on in the insurance industry. Good Luck to you. Be well.

Welcome to the forum Rebecca!

Out of curiosity, how does an investigator become proficient in the regulation of insurance agents, without a prior knowledge of the insurance industry? Would he need to obtain an insurance license?

I know that some DOIs have a very low ratio of investigators who actually have real experience in the field of insurance. I have always wondered why.
Would you mind sharing your opinion on this?

He's ex AF as well.

All the major players in the insurance insustry have some version of a "special investigations unit" in-house. Perhaps take a look and see what's available on-line. FYI every SIU person I've ever met started out as a regular claims rep initially. Maybe consider that as a way to get your foot in the door. Good Luck.

Why not try insurance sales of some type? Some of the best life/annuity agents I have ever met were former armed service members.

The tenacity, drive, & wit that the military creates are the perfect characteristics for a very successful agent. Plus a successful agent makes a heck of a lot more money!
