Let me start off by saying I'm not well versed in obamacare. I'm in KY and it appears that it'll be a state run exchange. I got an email stating the form is available now to apply to sell on the exchange in KY.

I write employ benefits and individual life. Haven't done any health insurance. Would this be worth getting into?

Nope................

I don't know about that TaterPeeler. SmokinGoose has the necessary props.. a shotgun, camouflage, and one of those gadgets that you blow into to attract the uninsured.

All he needs to do now is get CMS certified and go hunting!

Come on almighty TaterPeeler. Give SomkinGoose your blessings to obtain his Kentucky ObamaCare hunting permit! What do ya say?

He is only missing one thing. Where is the moonshine still?

No it isn't. You see, the only agents who have the necessary experience and knowledge of this vast, complex, government program are those who began studying this when it became law three years ago. Once they retire or die off there will be no agents left to sell in this marketplace.

Smokin Goose,

We here on the forums believe that these thousands of pages of new regulations provide a considerable hurdle to new entrants. Combined with a new (unknown) compensation structure and potential for fraud/misuse/misunderstanding/lawsuits, it may be a bad idea to start in this market, especially with no health background.

That said, the government thinks a 1-day crash course is enough to sell in SHOP, and a 2-3 day crash course is enough to sell on the Indy marketplace. If you have a Life/Accident/Health license, these 2 classes/tests are all that are technically stopping you. In reality, because of reduced portfolios, standardized designs, and all the "help" the government is building into the systems, it may be easier than ever to sell. All this technical wonky stuff we discuss here isn't known by 99% of agents anyway, and they'll do just fine.

My advice, roll the dice. Better to have the ability and not use it than wish you had it and not be able to get it. It will be a week and a few hundred bucks out of your life, but it's a gamble that may be worth taking, especially if you know how to cross-sell ;)
