Hello all,
My name is Eddie and I live in Bakersfield, CA. I've had my P&C insurance license for two years but due to the slow economy I haven't done anything with it besides keep up with the continuing education.
I'm trying to break into the commercial insurance industry, specifically transportation insurance, but I've realized you can't just jump in with no insurance experience and expect things to go smoothly, thus, I am in need of a mentor/business partner. Currently my wife and I own a small transportation permit service company with a dozen or so regular clients. We are looking to expand not only our client base, but also offer our permit clients transportation insurance.
We have a small office here in the Central Valley which is a main hub for the transportation industry with all the produce that comes out of here every year. I feel the Bakersfield market is ripe for the picking, as there are not too many focused transportation insurance companies here locally. Most of our clients are insured through brokers in Los Angeles, and would prefer local contacts (I know this through research).
I've worked in transportation before and I'm familiar with the insurance requirements mandated by the feds, so I'm only green when it comes to the ins and outs of binding insurance policies. But what I do know is that policies for single truck operations go from around $8K - $12k per year. Thats a sizable commission.
Now a bit about me. Currently I have a good job and live a comfortable life style, so there is no urgency or desperation on my end which I feel is a good thing (no hurry to turn big profits to feed my kids). With out going into detail I work a different type of work schedule which has me working only 10 week days or so a month. My wife is currently working just about part time at our permit business. If things work out, she will also be getting her CA P&C license.
As corny as this may sound, my desire to moonlight in insurance comes from a place deep in my heart that truly enjoys being an entrepreneur. Business has always been a hobby of mine. My current job pays me a good salary and benefits, but leaves me a little unsatisfied. I feel like I have potential to do more. I am an excellent student, and pick up things fairly quickly (this is almost starting to sound like a cover letter on a resume lol).
I'm not asking for any start up capital or anything like that, I've got my own money. I'm just looking for someone to show me the ropes of the insurance industry that wants to make a little money along the way. My ideal mentor could be someone that already works with transportation insurance, or someone willing to do a little leg work to break into that segment with competitive rates. My initial main focus will primarily be small trucking outfits with 1 or more tractors and trailers hauling refrigerated goods. Then from there the sky is the limit.
Any questions feel free to post or PM me.
Thank you.
Eddie
