Looking for a Preferred Carrier in Georgia

We've been in business since 1989 with 2.5 mil in written premium. We have a contract with Mercury, but their rates are not the best in our area(metro Atlanta). We have a good bit of business with Progressive, but don't like their new commission structure. We used to have a ton of Farmers business until they pulled their product. Travelers is non-renewing what we have left with them. We have several non-standard carriers but need something for our preferred clients. We almost got a contract with Auto-Owners, but they needed to see more property business. We've also tried Allied, State Auto, and Safeco with no success. Any ideas?

Have you looked at Harleysvilled. They are part of the Nationwide/Allied family and write preferred HO3 up here. I think they do down their as well.

Too bad Auto-Owners didn't work out. When I was an agent, I was an independent with access to five different personal lines insurers. But over 80% of the policies I sold were with Auto-Owners (or Owners, their Preferred subsidiary).

If the customer fit the Owners profile (over 40, married, good credit, homeowner, clean mvr & CLUE), I could beat anybody's rate AND with higher limits of liability, too. Even if they met the Auto-Owners underwriting requirements, they were very competitive. They also happen to be very easy to work with and they're the most ethical insurance company I've ever seen.

Maybe you can try to get a contract with them again down the road, but in the meantime....

Have you considered Donegal Group? They do business in Georgia as Southern Insurance Company of Virginia. They have very competitive rates in most circumstances. And if you do any Commercial (esp. Small Business) or would like to, they are kicking tail in quite a few Commerical Lines segments.

Cincinnati Insurance Company (cinfin.com) rates very highly in claims satisfaction and customer service, usually right up there with Auto-Owners. Definitely worth looking into!

You also might want to look into Southern Trust Insurance, based in Macon, GA. The agency where I worked just signed a contract with them a few months ago and, so far, so good! They're local, so it's worth a shot.

A few other ideas, although I'm just tossing out names and don't have any experience of knowledge with any of the following-

Kemper, Mercury, MetLife, Grange

Do you mind if I ask why State Auto declined to offer you a contract? They're been reeling from Property (Homeowners) losses for several years and they used to LOVE agencies that only wrote auto policies with them! But their rates weren't the most competitive and the commission structure wasn't all the great either. One thing I really liked about them, though, was that they classified a single parent with custody of a minor child the same as a married person.

I was also insured with State Auto for a couple of years, up until 2003 if I'm mistaken. I had an Uninsured Motorist Property Damage Claim (totaled my car, around $14k) and they made it so much easier than most companies would've. I would have stuck with them, but I had a ticket age off of my MVR prior to them sending my renewal offer. But the renewal still included the surcharge for the speeding ticket....I tried to get them to recalculate, but they wouldn't. So I went to Amica and saved about $450/year. :goofy:

Anyway, sorry to keep rambling...maybe one of these might work out for you!
