I am 45 y/o male with clean medical hx and exam, recently put on trial of oral methotrexate for psoriasis of the hand. I applied for a 1 million $ term life policy and came back with Class B rating and premium nearly triple of what was originally quoted. An inquiry to underwriting turned up that use of methotrexate was the cause for the sub-optimal rating an d premium. Is this common? And if I quite methotrexate, can I get a better rate? My dermatologist foresees I will come of the drug this summer.

Do you know if they got doctor reports? Methotrexate can prescribed for other ailments like Cancer as well.

Was this a captive agent that only represents one company? Who was the company. If the agent is Captive I would seek out an Independent agent that specializes in Life Insurance. Did it come back B or D?

If the agent is an independent he or she should be shopping it out for you with out sending in a formal application so as not to trigger another MIB hit. Also request a copy of your labs and an explanation from the underwriter for the rating.

A letter from you doctor explaining your prognosis could go a long way.

Get a note from your doc (on his/her letterhead) stating the Methotrexate is for psoriasis and ask your agent to submit for reconsideration. That should do it.
