MEWA's

Hey all - new to the forum - semi-new to selling insurance. Fairly experienced and have dabbled in most everything.

What I'm after here is a list (of sorts) of pro's and con's or opinions on MEWA's. I'm fairly certain that the lines of MEWA's are a bit shady with ERISA and what not...and I'm assuming they vary from state to state. From what I know and have heard from more experienced agents, they aren't a way to go. The one I'm dealing with currently is a chamber plan. The rates aren't real competitive and they've only had one renewal to date. The fine print on the employer contract is a bit fishy and I feel a risk to sign...

Any thoughts or past experiences with MEWA's - good or bad -you'd like to share...I'd love to read them.

Working for an insurance carrier I know that we translate MEWA to be bad risk. As you know, the only PRO is that you are pooling your risk. I would be curious to hear of any other PROs.

Out of curiosity, are you on your own or do you work for a firm?
