I need to help a friend who is a chirporactor in san diego area. He wants to get a group plan thru his business that would be for him and his wife. His wife isnt an employee, but she can be, if necessary, because she does his insurance billing. They dont have a lot to spend.. She currently has Kaiser for 15o a month and he has nothing. He is cheap. He wants to know , if they get a group , can she get a policy with better benefits than he might want,, ( catostraphic,, etc) or must they get the same, thanks

Re: Need Advice

Even if he does a group it will likely not save him any money.

He and his wife can form a partnership and qualify for a group if necessary.

You haven't given any of us enough information to know if $150 a month is a good deal although I would be surprised if she can do better price wise.

Re: Need Advice

Your wasting your time.

Chiropractors, Veterinarian, General Doctors, Therapists and Dentists never invest into their employees with group benefits.

I have chased all of those industries over the years and have only sold individual policies to them.
Dentists sometimes will be a part of association type plan.

GP's are the worst. Here they make a living off of insurance companies but yet will not provide their employees with any sponsored group health plan. They make me sick and I have even told a coupe prospects that. Thus they did not become clients.

Re: Need Advice

I'm not located in CA, so not familiar with the rules of your state. But the general answer is "yes". If she can be shown as an eligible employee, and if you select a carrier that will "dual choice", then he can pick one benefit plan and she can pick another.

Make sure your definition of "full-time employee" is liberal enough to allow for the hours that she works, and make sure the carrier accepts the type of compensation reporting that they do for her. (For instance, does she get paid via a 1099 or W-2). Also, make sure that you meet participation requirements for any other employee(s) that may meet the definition of eligibility.

My experience with Doctors, Dentists, Chiropractors and the like is that they do a very poor job of covering their employees as ABC said. However, I do have 2 doctors who buy generous benefits. One has the AZ BCBS plan with a $100 deductible 90% co-insurance and $1,000 out-of-pocket!! Another doctor carries employee benefits with medical, dental, vision, life, disability. However, in both cases they have a lot of employees who waive medical coverage. All other medical/dental professionals that I have tried to insure over the years are like the ones that ABC mentioned above.

Will anyone allow a "dual choice" with only two employees?

Yes they can qualify for group health insurance with a few carriers. There is one i have in mind that is more leniant then other carriers for small businesses with 2 employee's. But it definitely will NOT be cheaper then what they are paying now ($150.00 a month).

If they want more information you can give them my email if you like. [email protected]

Good luck to them

Here they make a living off of insurance companies

They actually make a living off of providing a service for patients. The patient uses the insurance company to pay a portion of the fee the doctor charges.
