Need Suggestion with the Claim

I have been with progressive for over 5 years.

Today I just had a minor bumper damage and I took it to auto collision and they estimated it would cost $1100 to repair/paint/labor for Bumper.

Now progressive had me take my car to one of their auto body shop and their Agent took the pictures and offered me a Check for $648. I have $100 deductible.

Now is there anyway I can tell progressive to give me check of $1100 instead ?

If not should I have it repaired ?:twitchy:

Progressive cannot tell you where to get the vehicle repaired. They can make suggestions and recommendations, however the choice is yours.

Go get a few estimates at a few body shops and send them to the adjuster working your claim. If all three are about the same amount then that will give them a baseline on how much they're going to have to settle the claim for.

If one body shop quotes you $1100, but two others quote you $650, then it is not unreasonable for them to offer to settle at $650. However, if all three quote you $1100, then that is what you should insist they settle for (minus your deductible).

Oh, I would much rather an insurance company call the claim $650 ($750 total) than $1100 total. In many states, its under the claim threshold and won't get rated. Not sure what state the OP is in, so this may or may not be an issue.

Anvil - Insurance companies pay book rate for repairs. Not all body shops use book rate and may opt to do some additional repairs beyond the actual damage caused by the fender bender. If you don't care, and Progressive has a body shop that will do it for $648, go there and get the work done. It has to be very minor stuff.

If you take it to a different body shop and they need more money, they know how to ask for a supplemental (more money from the insurance company). Don't sweat it, they know how to get it done.

My experience is carriers aren't influenced much by estimates from body shops anymore, especially if one of their adjusters has seen the car. Again, they will simply tell you to have the body shop do the work and ask for a supplemental if needed. Supplements are sometimes easy, sometimes a fight, but it gets your car repaired.

You take the $648 check. Then take the insurance estimate to any shop you choose. The shop will repair the car for that (plus your deductible).

What happens if the shop tells you up front they will do the repair for $650 and then your insurance company writes $900 in damage? So you give the shop all $900? Hell no you don't. Insurance companies have different repair standards. The same damage will cost different amounts to repair depending on what company is paying the bill. The shop wants everything the company pays so the shop's estimate is ALWAYS a bogus, inflated estimate. Now, if you want to pay cash and not make a claim, then the shop can do the repair for $1100. But if your company is paying the bill, they'll do it for $748.

Call your claim adjuster and request another inspection at your preferred body shop, which is what should of happened in the first place. The shop will negotiate directly with the estimator and should be able to agree on a fair & reasonable settlement, if damage is related and estimate isn't over inflated. If you don't have a preferred shop, get referrals and obtain 2-3 estimates to determine if Progressive's offer is fair and dispute, if its not.

The less claims you make with your insurance company, the less chance your premiums will rise as a result. I would check around and see if you can find a shop that will make the repair for $748 or less.
