New Agent. Please Advise.

Question for all you seasoned pros. I've recently gone to work for a local indy agent on a part-time basis. 70/30 (me/him) commission splits on new business and renewals. No non-compete so if I were to leave, the book is mine. Tradeoff is this: not a whole lot of guidance and support, no advertising allowance, etc. Any business coming into the agency that cites my ads as the impetus for calling are my insureds.

My question is this: Being that I'm new to sales, what pearly drops of wisdom can you give me as it relates to how to prospect and low-cost advertising strategies? As stated, time is an issue since its a moonlighting and weekends gig. Even still, I think there is immense potential in the area I currently work in and would like to hear your thoughts.

Thanks in advance and your imput is greatly appreciated.

I expect to make the move to full time before the end of the year. In the meantime, service is delivered by myself or the agent I work for. My book isn't huge at this point and so far it hasn't been an issue.

there are many moonlighting agents. The best way to prospect for part-timers is the referrals. Mail drops are the second best option.

What is your specialty type of products?

Homeowners and auto is primarily what we sell. Its pretty good money especially when you factor in windstorm and flood coverage since we're on the gulf coast.

Anyone have any experience advertising in the monthly newsletter distributed by HOAs in master-planned communities. I think this would be a fairly targeted approach, particularly in more affluent ones.
