New Agent to Forum. Hello Everyone

I kind of jumped on here and posted some yesterday without introducing myself. I wish I had found this forum much, much, sooner!

For the last month I have been back in the State Farm agent's office I started in back in '05 so I could cut my teeth and put up the kind of numbers that are required to gain support from local leadership and set myself apart from the competition.

Background: 10+ years in claims, both staff and independent, most notable position was National Catastrope Claims Manager for a small-mid-sized IA firm.

Was recruited by a market AFE. He told me to go to work for an agent, get some letters behind my name, and put up some sales figures. I lost touch with him over the next few years, and I did exactly that.

I quit my 6 figure position, sold my new house, my beloved 66GT Fastback, gave up golf and anything that cost money.

I took a position as a field claims rep for Fireman's Fund, a position that allowed me to work from home and study for CLU. I completed it in about 9 months.

My SF agent, who is also my father-in-law, let his Life/Securities rep go for lack of production, and I came on board in late 05. With three policies on the books, I qualified him for Legion of Honor, a feat he was worried about missing for the first time in 29 years.

2006- Qualified him for LOH again, Level II Ambassador Travel. $1 million in new assets under management for SFMVPC and/or Phoenix. Gained entry into the pool, and posted for the first thing that popped up. I got it.

2007- SF Agency Internship. Became a TICA Aug 1. Qualified for Fall Life Promo, best month was 46 life apps.

2008-Won multiple awards for auto every quarter. On-Time for travel. Top 30 in the Southern Zone Mutual Funds, and was on pace to crack into the Top 100 nationwide.

July 28th, 3 days before the end of my TICA contract, I was informed I would not be offered an AA005.

Obviously the last month has been a worldwind. No explicit reason was given, but I can draw conclusions from the bits and pieces they would give me. I guess they are basing it on "Next Generation Competencies", but the are being tight lipped about it. The did not terminate my contract, just did not offer me a new one. The corporate wagon has circled, and they aren't giving me much info out of fear because initially I raised some serious concerns.

I'll spare the gory details now, I just wanted to introduce myself so some would know more about me. I will happily tell my story as required or when asked.

I'm not going to be negative, but I WILL be realistic. I'm currently trying to heal from the long path and huge sacrifices I made for that opportunity to have the rug pulled by what I know to be unfair circumstances.

Still, I take responsibility for not building better relationships within the DAFO. I simply could not wait to get away from them and into the Market, and in retrospect I failed because I think I let that and other concerns (contract) show.

I still love SF. I am not going to bash it. My experience is not the same as others. I believe in positive leadership, and that does exist in this fine organization. Just not within my immediate former chain of command.

So there you have it. I'm looking for new opportunities and think the people here and this forum are a very valuable resource so far.:)

From reading the other posts on the current SF contract what looks like a negative may be a positive. Obviously you can sell and have experience. Why not go Indy and then the sky is the limit and not dependent upon the biases of those higher up. Welcome aboard!

Sounds like you are a very strong in sales!

With your strong experience, XRAC might be right. Going ind would give you the chance to go as far as you want, without being locked into that SF chain of command.

Good luck to you,
Steve

I've been reading this board non-stop for the past couple of days.

I can sell. I could be much, much better and I know it.

To be honest, I have never, until now, even given a SINGLE minute of thought to being Indie.

I put my resume out on the WEB and have been slammed with calls from cos that don't have good reps on Google searches...but that may be biased.

My whole experience has been around the captive side and SF. I thought the only way to make any money was build up a huge p&C book, but some of you guys are doing fantastically well.

It's like my eyes have been opened for the first time. If I had a sharp degree of business accumen (doh) I would have realized this sooner, but I made the jump to SF blind based on agent I knew (that were on the old contract). SF has defined my whole career.

I've sent direct mail and used billboards to sell auto. I've "cold" called clients in the existing book for life insurance.

I'm not afraid of calling, but still don't understand the commission schedules ( you could never earn a living just selling life or health with SF's rate that I know of) or renewals. It must be there, because people refer to it.

I'll try not to be the resident non-searching "Newbe", but this is pretty wild to find something like this.

I was preparing to take my 6/63 and maybe go the Financial Services route, or worse, go back to claims.

I'm apprehensive about making the jump and starting from scratch with no existing p&c referrals helping keep my boat afloat...but something tells me I can do it.

I just want to be armed with the most info possible about the contracts, leads, tracking/organization, etc...

Thanks!

I put up numbers, before, sure. But I do not want to mislead anyone. My mojo for the past month is gone. Have to get it back.

I leveraged existing relationships to cross sell. I don't have what I would think is a great conversion rate, but then again I'm cold calling. I need to get much better.

CLU has helped me.

All of those awards and accomplishments did not earn me a lot of extra income. I think SF has it set up for recognition more than anything.

Most life was leverage with auto discounts. I've written mostly small term (a few big ULs with large dumps, a few VAs) small premium, very small commission. The rates in the indie world appear to be 3-5X what I was used to.

There appears to be a big difference from using the leads and good systems (not to mention commission rates) as opposed to what I've done, which is call people in the book right before their birthday...

Look forward to learning from this place:noteworthy:

oh, and I guess Indy might be better, since I must be some kind of rebel.

Re: New Agent to Forum...Hello Everyone

It is possible to have life insurance commission payouts in the 100-115% range as an INDY. My advice would be to read and study this board and other board. Take your time and gain all the information you can and then make an informed decision. There is a wealth of sales information on topgunprducers.com but mostly geared towards life insurance.

Interview and talk with some of the well thought of companies especially Metlife. They will pay a starting salary for the first few months and you could have access to all products including P&C.

Thanks. Any other boards? Insurance or especially securities related?
