New Member with Determination

Hello All,

Let me tell a little about myself, I'm currently working full time and also have a full time business. I have about 2-3 years total for sales background. I'm looking to become a insurance broker and incorporate it with my existing business. I have an office space inside my retail store. I'm very excited about this and would love to help out my community. I'm also bi-lingual and know that this will help the older folks in the community. I would like to start out with auto insurance and then work my way with life insurance. I'm looking at being independent......Thanks;)

P.S. Any pointers will be appreciated.

Bi-lingual is a big plus if it's Spanish. Auto and Life are two different licenses. Might want to pick one first.

You did not say which language or community. Based on your comments I would guess South East Asian. If so Great Life Insurance market.

Sorry, not in Spanish. My background is actually Hmong. We originated from China and into Laos. Yes, as a newbie I do want to start with auto first. Thanks

Welcome. Is your business?

Yes, I retail in auto parts and accessories with 100% store front specializing in HID kits. At this time my brother is managing the shop for me.

You'll find it much more difficult as a new agent to get contracts for P&C than you would for L&H.

I can not speak to Auto.

But the Hmong community is a great market for Life insurance. The fact that the funerals for the elders are so high automatically raises the premium.

Underwritting is much easier than it was 15 or 20 years ago. Getting a larger face amount may be an issue if on SSI.

The only issue I see is trust. Like most immigrant communities. They have been burned by unethical people. Many times from their own community. The younger part of the community are pretty much like any other. Except, many times they are responsible for their elders, Who may live with them.

I do see that happening, since the elder no nothing they think they'll make a huge profit from them by taking advantage of. That's why I'm here. I want to contribute ethical and equality practices. I've seen these disgusting habits and want to end it. It may be easy to say but my future track record will prove it. I have a relative currently selling life insure and had asked me to try it out. I know nothing about it and seems pretty complicated since so many factors are involved. That's why I think auto insurance will be easier to start with. Please fill in the detail and enlightened me. This will be the perfect place for guidance.

I have done work with Hmong families for many years. It can be time consuming, but if you are trusted you will write everyone in the family. Maybe the same day. Do you come to the Hmong New Years in California?

>>Please fill in the detail and enlightened me.
Sure. Gotta a couple years?

I have done Auto and I have done Life. The quoting, writing and underwriting seemed more cut and dry in Auto. But the service is insane.

In Life Insurance you should pick a niche to start. Decide who your main market will be. Then you may have some direction. Do not try to be all things to all people. Or you will not do well.

Some may disagree. Check that. Many will disagree. I do not feel this is the type of career that can or should be done part time. Does your relative do it full time? Maybe they can mentor you.

Tell the truth. The whole truth.

If I can be of help let me know.

Unfortunately I've never been to the west coast Hmong new year. But here in MN, our new year and soccer tournament is pretty big too.

I do have a couple of years! Not just that, I want to better my self and give back to my community. I'm a believer that if you do good, in return you'll succeed. That's the philosophy my father had taught me.

My cousin just got into it not too long ago. I'm a little worried because he might not know all the ins and outs to properly adquire the industry correctly.

I know selling life may be easier and more commission but not everyone will be interested at least I think. But If I start with auto, It's kind of like a necessity where you're going to need it. Also, maybe you can show me they way? I already have an idea but advice and guidance is key. Thanks!!!
