Hello all! Like what I have read so far so I will ask for your thoughts. I am 3 mos. into my new career. Like the business, and think I am a good fit. I am, however, becoming very turned off by the practices at my branch.

1st, the structure at the office troubles me. My immediate supervisor, who is responsible for my training and development, depends on his own sales as his primary income. He gets all the leads, gives me the ones called for 3 mos. that he didn't bag, then demands that I produce from them. How do I (a newbie) compete with/against my manager, who gets fresh leads and has vastly more experience?

2nd, the agent turnover rate is astounding. They get churned in at 20-30 every 2 weeks. It appears to me we are brought in more as telemarketers than insurance agents to make the cold calls the managers and veteran agents won't make, and then paired with them in the field and forced to split commissions them.

3rd, the phone scripts are out and out deceptive and probably borderline illegal, and most certainly unethical.

I think the company's products are really great (at least in this state), and I like the concept of insurance and the people I meet with. But being new, I am not familiar with the sales practices and structure at other companys. Can anyone willing share some thoughts?

If you feel uncomfortable as far as ethics are concerned, you're not in the right place. I can tell you that I have NEVER ONCE questioned the ethics of the people I work with and would not stick around and be associated with them if I did. Get out and find an ethical agent to learn from. Nothing good can come from what you're describing.

And no, it's not like that in most other places.

Get out quick before it is to late. "Stockholm Syndrome" will start to set in very quickly and at that point you will find your self stuck there for ever.

Stockholm Syndrome affects 8 out 10 career agents in the US and is the number one career killer of agents worldwide.

Good luck maybe try one of the indy assoc's offered on the forum.

You have to have the confidence in your endeavor. But if you feel a little doubtful rather just start on your own first.

You will talk to agents day in, day out who look at this as a job. Every policy sold is a means to an end, every premium payment is a commission paycheck and nothing more.

What you've got to remember is that this career is more than that. You can profoundly touch people's lives with the products you sell - positively or negatively. You can save homes, keep families together, and keep people out of bankruptcy with what you've got to offer. Or, you can bleed them dry and leave them with coverage that won't be there when they need it - coverage that will leave them absolutely broken if they try to use it.

If you ever, ever, ever are in a situation where you feel your ethics are compromised just to make an insurance sale, run fast and run far.

Ill tell you the truth: this is a business where you will make more money if you think long term and less money if you think short term.

The primary factor that will determine your success is your ability to develop quality prospects to talk to about your business. You can do that 3 ways: marketing, networking, and performance leading to referrals.
