Just got notification today that Wellpoint will no longer sell stand alone kids policies in any of the states they do business in.

This is going to hurt a lot of families.

Re: Wellpoint

Because Wellpoint is not a household name in Illinois, I had to look it up. What I found is staggering.

Wiki: WellPoint - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's a good thing we have the new HHS PCIP high-risk pools or a lot of little ones would have no choice but to remain uninsured.

It's ironic that the www.wellpoint.com corporate site has 3 pictures of little smiling girls placed on their front page. I wonder what photos will replace them? Three crying children?

You're right ABC, even though there is the PCIP option, this decision from Wellpoint will negatively affect a lot of families. I wonder if HCSC, parent of Blue Cross of Illinois, will now have second thoughts about offering a child-only policy?

Re: Wellpoint

BCBSGA (an Anthem/Wellpoint company) is taking the stance they may deny coverage to children if they apply outside of open enrollment.

When is open enrollment?

No one knows because HHS has not decided.

Until then, they will average the rate up on the child with the rest of the family members making everyone in the family cover the risk associated with the sick child. If the family rate up is inadequate, the child will be denied coverage and can apply again during open enrollment but only as part of a new family application.

Too bad, too sad. This is exactly what those same people said they wanted when they voted for Obama AND their local Democratic representative(s) and Senators.

'kk 'em all

Re: Wellpoint

BCBSIllinois let agents know about three weeks ago that they would no longer take kids on a stand alone basis.

Until I receive written communication I'm not posting carrier names. However, on the horn with two carrier reps yesterday, both offering "guaranteed issue" coverage for children with a family app.

I played devil's advocate and asked how it would work if the child had, say, cancer - thousands a month in ongoing care.

Both reps said they would likely "be forced" to decline that application. I rebutted with "so it's guaranteed issue....kinda."

Not much of a reply. Both said they are working on agent guides but I'm not holding my breath.

Come 9/23 if you submit a family case where the child has to go guaranteed issue I suggest forming a group circle where everyone can hold hands.

Re: Wellpoint

I have been told by Anthem, UHC, and Humana over the phone that they are still able to decline children post 9/23. Strange.
