Hi guys - Before you crucify me: I know this is a noob question, I'm just looking for some general info.

I'm looking at breaking into the commercial P&C biz & was hoping I could get some general pointers of potential markets - I'm in a fairly small town & don't know how much potential exists here.

A couple follow-up questions:
  • There is a large paving company with 500+ vehicles in town - What are the chances of landing an auto policy like that?
  • What about local municipalities, Police department, Maintenance vehicles, etc?

Thanks much for your help!!

If you are in a small town, odds are those accounts belong to someone who has been in business 20+ years and is best buds with everyone. That, or it belongs to a major firm out of a big city. In either case, good luck stealing that account away.

There is always opportunity, but don't go elephant hunting when you need to be deer hunting just to suvive.

It depends where you are located. In CA most accounts are driven by the workers comp. In the South along the gulf coast they are property driven. Certain accounts are auto fleet driven. You want to know where the pain is for your insurance buyer and offer solutions to that pain.

As Volagent said... a newbie trying to bag large accounts with no prior relationship with that account is very, very unlikely. You bring nothing to the table in terms of product, price or relationship. If you do not have a relationship with an account... you better have a product that cannot be beat (or matched) and that is very hard to do on jumbo accounts that have been profitable.
