Sorry for the intrusion if this is a place for the insurance brethren only, but where better than a forum of agents to get an answer on how to get insurance?
I live in a U.S. territory and my local auto insurance doesn't extend to the mainland U.S. When I moved to San Francisco 25 years ago I found that the mainland didn't recognize that I had any insurance and forced me to get insurance as if I was a brand new driver, paying premium rates for years. I had no choice.
Well, I need to do this again.
I will be doing work in the mainland U.S., primarily California, about half the year, commencing in January. I will be purchasing a used car in SF, one where the value will not require comp and collision coverage. I just want liability insurance in case I am judged at fault in an accident.
I'm 61, the last ticket I got was for improper lane change entering an L.A. freeway (which a judge threw out) in 1991. No DUI, no accidents, etc.
So....
1. Can I get just liability coverage in the Bay Area, even though I have no recent driving history in the mainland?
2. Can I pay "normal' rates for it this time?
3. With all these computerized quote sites now, would I be able to use those or need to go through an agent because I'd have to explain this situation?
Thanks for any help.
