I'm very new with forum. I'm about to take the P & C licence exam in GA. My question is: Once I passed the exam, do I have to work through a P &C broker or I can start by my own by appointment direct with carriers? which way is better? I think I better work under a broker so I can get trained ? Do you have any advice to me? By the way, anyone knows any good P & C broker in GA, please advice me. I appreciate for any input!

It is almost impossible to get direct appointments when you are new. Also, the E&O coverage alone will kill you. Get with a reputable broker in your area, someone that can teach you. Trust me, there is soooo much to learn. Take at least 1 year to find your niche, I mean try to see what you like to sell, there are so many products in P&C. In the mean time you will have some sort of a book of business. Then if you think you are ready, go on your own. Maybe then companies will give you appointments.

I'm in south of Atlanta. Any one know any thing about" Smart Choice" company? I started talking with them about the program they have, but they have some restrictions and it sounds hard to get out their program. Air Jer, you have any program for new agents like me? Please advice! Thanks

I would work for another agency first. By working in an established office you can learn about processes, marketing, and get a more in depth understanding of the insurance industry and coverages. Much easier to learn from someone else who has an established system that works than to try to figure it out on your own. I worked for other agencies for 14 years. I just opened my own agency last year and I am glad that I had the experience to see what different offices have done and what works.

I am a new agent and have found it hard to get appointed directly with carriers.I recently started working under another independent agent and have access to a lot of the carriers.Expect to do a 60/40 70/30 split with whoever you choose to work until you get your feet wet and can open up your own office.Good luck with your exams.

avalon, I have experience (captive) how did you go about getting started? I'm in Tennessee.

when you do a split like that with a local broker, do they allow you to take your business with you when you leave?
