Hello -- I just passed my P&C exam. I know there are lots of options once I get my license and I would greatly appreciate your advice. I've been approached to train with one of the Big 3 companies. I live in Pasadena, CA. Thank you in advance!

You learn thru error and trial. Just don't do any thing illegal. Start a agency, Sign up with whole salers until you get a company direct. Once you get a company direct start selling it like there is no tomorrow. Once you star getting big comission checks from said company. Walk into any building of any company who still has not signed you up. Put your commision statements and loss ratio report on their desk and tell them to sign you up NOW.

You will not make any money working for some one.

I would get a good two years of experience with a SF, Allstate, or Nationwide agency then branch out by yourself or with another independent agency. You can't train yourself and most independent agencies don't have the time or resources to train you how to sell, write, issue policies the way you need to. The big three do a really great job of training you but they shouldn't be your long term goal.

Renting a small office space is easy but what carriers would appoint with no experience?
Plus you need Errors & Omissions and that's costly. For a start I'd recommend at least 6-12 months working as a team member somewhere (that'll certainly teach you how to run an agency) and even though you'll make low pay it quickly improves the learning curve.

This is good advice. You must have a good plan to leave after 24 months, you don't want to be a career captive agent.

I'm seeking an agency producer in Lake Balboa, CA (part of the City of Los Angeles), which is not too far away. Give me a call at 818-296-9558. Would be happy to talk with you.
