Preparing for FE Career

Hello everyone. My name is Matt. I have been lurking around this forum for months now, soaping up as much knowledge that I can. This forum has been very informative and thank you to everyone sharing their experience.
Right now I am working, trying to save as much money as I can. I am strongly considering picking up a part time job as well. When I do enter the market, I want to hit the ground running with an adequate amount of money for a constant flow of leads. I am not licensed yet and I know I need to learn a lot more about insurance in general.
Here is my question: What do you guys think is the best way for me to prepare for a career in FE sales? While I am working, how would my spare time be best spent? Thanks in advance.

Read lots of posts on the forum, and if you can't find the answer you are looking for, ask intelligent well thought out questions. Avoid at all costs any captive organization (for final expense anyway) Final Expense 101 is a decent resource as well for some. Good luck. If you are anywhere near Utah, contact me and I am happy to help.;)

Get ahold of every FE application and brochure and underwriting manuel that you can and study them. Also rate cards.

Read every piece of insurance junk mail that you can and look for the gotchas and loop holes (all mail order insurance has them).

Read the forum.

I would have at least 2-3 months living expenses saved up. Also, figure out how you are going to get your leads.

You need to get with an FMO/IMO that provides training, support and leads. Don't even worry about the commission levels as long as they provide training and support. You can always leave for higher commissions if you deserve them and they won't raise them where you got the training. Worst thing that could happen is they won't release you and you couldn't write a few companies for a while. No big deal on that, there are plenty of companies out there.

I'm with EFES and I'm partial to them, but I can't really say if they would provide what you need. They would probably be great for your second stop after you got to know the basics. They may offer something for the beginner, but I sure wouldn't know what it is.

Check with Todd King here at the forums. I don't know is he offers what you are needing. If he does he is one of the good guys.

Machine, welcome to the forum.

If you give me a call, I'll help as much as I can. I'm not sure if I would be the best fit for you, but if not, I can help steer you to a few places.

I may even have some agencies in your local area that I could hook you up with.
