I will be starting a new Erie Insurance agency in the next few weeks. Erie wants to be the only standard carrier in agency if agent opts to go on enhanced commission plan. So I would like to know who you guys recommend as a good, solid non-standard carrier for homeowners?

Fyi - I will be using Progressive for non-standard auto.

Foremost and American Modern should work. Also link up with a surplus lines broker like All Risks or Burns & Wilcox. I signed up for the enhanced commissions and have one other preferred carrier. If you sell enough the Erie management will leave you alone.

Also look at UPCIC as they can be considered a "non-standard" for people as well. Foremost and AMIG are also strong options.

So do you have to have Erie as the only standard FOREVER or can that get better over time as more risks come out? Is it just for personal lines or commercial lines as well?

I will definitely check into those 2 carriers. I've sold them in the past so there is familiarity with their system and process.

Which company is your other preferred carrier?

And thanks for recommendation on surplus lines broker.

In TN Donegal might be a good fit for your as the other preferred. Although, I was told Donegal and Erie don't like being in the same agency together.

You could also try Kemper or Safeco as well for the other preferred carrier.

They prefer to be the only standard carrier in agency while agent is on enhanced commission program. You have the option of being on Enhanced commission for up to 3 years.

In my area Erie is the best option the majority of the time for clean risks and a lot of commercial too. I'm going to come off of the special program a year early next summer but a buddy of mine moved to TN and opened an Erie agency. I can give you his info.

I'd appreciate it. I've done quite a bit of research so his name will probably ring a bell. I'll send you a pm.
