I sell senior market stuff and had a question.. My mom. in Florida. just lost her license due to poor responses at retest at dmv . she is 78.. her neuro doc told her not to drive anymore.. Her insurance co, statefarm , I think.. told her they'll cancel her soon.. My q. I live in CA.. can I add her car to my policy as I also live in the FL home and do drive her car when I visit.. Also,. she wants a helper to drive her to the market a few times a week and to use her car.. it is a handicapped van.. Another idea,. she was thinking of having a live in for a few days to drive her around and then let the live in take her car and use it for her use for the other days she isnt at my mom's house.. any ideas on the leaglities?

What is that again? Can you simplify your question? I think the best thing that you can do is to ask your insurer about that - to make sure that you do not fall short of legalities.

You'll have to have a policy on the car in the state where it is garaged. (in other words, where the car is kept) You could get the policy yourself but you would have to get it from a company that does business in FL. Some companies also have issues about the car being titled to you (some require it, some don't). Also, you may have to get a specific exclusion for your mother. If she has a live in, they would probably have to be added to the policy as a driver. However I would strongly recommend not allowing that person access tp the vehicle for their own use. You would have no way of knowing what that person is up to when your mother isn't around, and you and/or your mother could be on the hook legally if they cause an accident. Even if you have really high limits, it's possible the damages could exceed those limits.

Hope this helps.
