Has anyone seen rate-ups for children in Texas? (Indiv policies)

Does the obese child get regular (standard)rates?
Yes, they've gotta cover the child (as a dependent on parent's policy), but are they charging for the pre-x risk?

Any examples?
Like:
Had a 100% rate-up from BCBS-Tx for diabetic child.

I haven't seen ANY rate-ups for children, but I don't typically see obese, diabetic kids (looking for coverage) either.

I had a memo about children (& rate-ups), but can't seem to find it right now.

Thought maybe some of you geniuses might have that answer on the tip of your tongue.
(Couldn't even find the answer on the internet.):nah:

I believe most states are the same. A child is protected from a higher rate if they enroll during the month of their birthday. If they enroll and did not have 63 days or prior coverage and are under 19 they can be assessed a 20% surcharge for 1 year. Then it drops off. I had a child that had a skin cancer removed, had no prior coverage, and was given a 600% rate up. It was a tier 7! That was Blue Shield of CA.

No, they are not the same.

Each carrier, each state, has their own rules.

Some carriers cap the rate up for children, others don't, and the cap varies by state.

Some carriers pay $0 commission on non-standard GI children, some carriers pay $0 commission on the entire family if you have a GI kid.

That was well thought out. I'm sure an unintended consequence of trying to help. Let's force insurance to accept those kids and get the brokers to stay out of the process. Consumers lose

At one time I had notes on who does what. Now I just give folks a link to complete the app if they want to cover kids.

Only Blue pays full commission, even on the rate up.

Cigna pays $0 and I believe one other carrier does likewise.

It's a real circle jerk.

Anthem pays full comp on kids rated at the highest level (HIPAA rates), other companies pay on the base rate before rate-up here. As far as I know there is no max on how much they can rate up kids.

I called BCBS-Tx.

Their max rate-up = 700% (for THAT person/child)

I KNOW I have a memo (about the rate-ups for children with pre-x conditions in Texas).

I'll post the info when I find it!
It will only apply for Texas, though.
That's ALL that I can keep up with.
Don't know HOW you guys keep up with several/many states???

Thanks for the replies!!!

Make sure they don't apply the load to other family members. Can't say if they ever did it here but that was one thing they considered since the max rate up was 70% here.

State laws and carrier guidlines within those laws determine max rate ups.

Remember children can not be declined AND there can be no waivers or or pre ex regardless when insured last.

This is a good preview to GI without a mandate.

Change you can believe in.
