SEO for the Long Haul

In October of 2008 I launched a P&C site to see if I could attract any business that had decent premiums. I worked on my SEO and content more than anything, sometime up to 20+ hours a week. Often I felt like more of a programmer(Not a good one) and a SEO novice than an insurance broker. By February my site was generating traffic and by September my site was generating enough "quality" traffic that I was able to step away from cold calling and PPC.

My site needs work but I think what I find most valuable about this forum is that in many ways we are all SEO novices(some experts) and that their is plenty of business for those of us who work at it.

I wanted to see if we could create a subgroup or a discussion panel about emerging SEO tactics and organic strategies for improving traffic.

Let me know if you would find this conversation useful and if you have something you would like to share. Of course I will share all my pee brain has to offer on the subject.

Some of my top terms are:

commercial insurance broker - Page 1 and 2
California commercial insurance broker - Page 1
California professional liability quote - page 1

SoCalinsurancebroker.com

I am afraid that a bunch of threads on SEO would be a bunch of myths and bad information that would possibly waste valuable sales time for the Insurance Agent.

Just think of how much insurance you could have sold when you were working 20+ hours a week to accomplish this. Too huge of a learning curve in my opinion to tackle both professions.

Commerical Insurance Broker receives 590 searches NationWide

California Commercial insurance broker -0 searches per Month ( Title of your Home Page)

California Professional Liabilty Quote 0 Searchers per month

Dave,

I understand you perspective, you make money$$$$ providing SEO services for Insurance agencies and brokers. So obviously a group of DIY SEO novices discussing tactics, sharing links and advice would be detrimental to you and your business. I would suggest that this would actually benefit you as most brokers do not have the time to invest in proper SEO tactics as you put it in your thread. I have considered your services at times as this is a time consuming and difficult process to stay in a highly ranked position.

I used the keywords I used for precisely the reason you listed in your thread, low volume, my long tail keywords are just that, mine, they generate business so strategically it would not make sense to post them. However we can have a discussion about tactics can't we?

I have over $1MM in written premium this year from leads developed from my site and I welcome both your ideas and constructive criticism. My investment has absolutely paid off and I challenge others to be open minded and give it a try, if it is to difficult or time consuming they'll call you.

Just trying to have a legit conversation about SEO with others who do their own SEO. Take it for what it is.

Cheers and Happy Holidays.

No actually I am not working with many individual insurance agents anymore. Too complicated and time consuming for the cost.

So that was not my point, and it would not be detrimental to my business at all.

OCNobel,

I am the new dmoz editor for the category you applied to. I just looked at your site, nice work. You are now in the dmoz directory. Another little SEO bump.

I would recommend you put your address as well as a couple other keywords in your description though. The address may be used as a citation for local SEO. If not, it doesn't hurt. Look at the other website descriptions in the category and PM me a new one and I will update your listing for you.
