Hello everyone!
Newbie here asking a couple of questions for all you professionals. Now I am almost positive that you have seen these type of threads started before but this one is pertaining to ME, haha. I have recently been contacted by a well known insurance company and scheduled for an interview next Tuesday. However, I am totally new to the business. My mother was an agent for about 9 years, and says that I would be great at Insurance Sales. That being said, she is my mother and will support me in anything that I would want to pursue.
I am 21 years old and have lived on my own since age 18. Went to a technical school for 2 years and have a total of 5 years sales/retail positions. I am currently enrolled at a university to get a bachelors degree in Finance.
My current position in sales is a Service Advisor at a major car dealership. I love and enjoy the sense of fulfillment I obtain when I help clients save hundreds on getting their automobile repaired. This position is 100% commission, but the clients drive right up to you! I am looking for a career in Insurance and retirement consultant to have that same enjoyable fulfillment, except bigger!
Even though I am young, I am not the type of person to worry about myself. I was raised to care for others and it shows in my work! I don't work to collect a paycheck( even though bills have to be paid) I work to better the clients!
I have gotten over the fear of rejection a long time ago, and I am a very sociable person. I love to provide information for clients and enjoy the one on one time with them, most of them have turned into great friends of mine!
With that said, should I make the career switch over to Insurance/retirement Sales. Like I said I am currently enrolled for Finance and my dream has always been a financial advisor position.

Thanks for your input ahead of time, Ive already learned so much from the site!

For a second I thought I was reading a match.com ad. Never been a member of that.. Well to answer you question with out going in a lot of boring details I think you well do very well in the insurance field. Most guys who come from the car industry do very well. You seem like you have a good head on your shoulder and beside you have your mom as your guide/ mentor. Good luck

You can always give it a try and see if it is right for you.

Maybe your mother can also show you the ropes and help you.

I agree that I think you can do well. However, I do not understand how a service advisor at a dealership can help a customer save hundreds on an automotove repair. The only thing I can think of is you tell them that a repair is under warranty instead of coming out of their pocket. Your job is to sell them repairs not vice versa.

By pointing out other related repairs that could be done cheaper now while it's already apart rather than waiting until it breaks next month perhaps?

Thanks for all of the feedback! I will surely go to the interview and see what they have to offer for me. I help my customers save a lot of money on their car by giving them quotes! A lot of people think dealerships are expensive, but so can independent shops. I also make sure to give them discounts when they need. Last year I raffled off a free skydive for two for my customers and revenue increased dramatically because of that.

I'm glad you are looking into the Life Insurance Industry. With Life Insurance these days, you can receive a good return on Cash Value investments without losing when the market fails. It seems impossible how a financial advisor can even act confident in this market right now. Like i pointed out earlier, the road to safe investments while beating inflation comes from Universal Life Products. They allow you to pull out of the Cash Value account without penalties such as 10% for your 401K or IRA's. In your sense, putting customers before you, don't you think it's more important to have a secure income to put your kids through college and retire without leaving a burden?? I don't see how anyone can feel comfortable with their financial advisors after watching the stock market crash the past decade. It just isn't morally correct.

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone! I am excited about the interview that will held next week. By the way, it is with Mutual of Omaha. I've read some really good topics on them and I think it will be a great start for my career. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
