Starting As an Independent Life Agent in CT

Just getting licensed. I want to sell life insurance - term, whole life to start. A few questions:

1) Will New York Life or Northwestern contract with independents? Or do they sell just through their captive agents?

2) Can you recommend other cash value life insurance companies that have strong, competitive products?

3) Also looking setting up tax advantaged plans for small business owners.

The 2 you mention focus on captive, not independent.

Guardian and mass mutual are 2 companies with great cash values, that sell through independent channels.
