Hi all, I am currently a Junior in college and am considering getting into the insurance business upon graduation. I will be going through a lot of the old posts in the next few weeks to learn as much as possible and asking questions as they come up.

For now I would just like to know if there is anything I can or should be doing to better prepare myself?

Thanks all,

Kyle

I would search and read all of the old posts that make sense (some are garbage). If you read on here that the consensus is a company is not very good trust what you read. Topgunproducers also has a lot of stuff worth reading. After I have educate myself by reading I would start interviewing other agents or companies in the area of insurance I an most interested in. I would talk to them about the business and about opportunities. You may want to try an intern position. You do not say what type of insurance you are interested in. The major fields of emphasis appear to be:

P&C, Life, Health, or Seniors

If you are interested in Life I would definitiely talk with MM, NWML, NYL, Guardian, and Metlife.

If you are interested in P&C the opportunities with SF and Farmers are not ones I would personally pursue. SF was at one time the best opportunity going but I think the worm has turned. Some of the other captive opportunities such as Farm Bureau, Country Companies, Nationwide, Sentry, American Family, etc. may be better.

Welcome and good luck.

Do you have someone that will support you for the 1st year? Real learning curve here...

I like to eat!!!

I am a business major and I have always wanted to run my own business. I currently work for a Sherwin Williams as a Sales Associate. My plan "B" has been to just to go into the Sherwin Williams MTP program and work my way up from there. Although, I just really don't want to sell paint the rest of my life. My dream job use to be opening my own car dealership but, I just don't see that having the profitability I want.

I'm good with people and love to sell. I've always heard one can make a good income from selling insurance. I know it takes a while to get cliental built up, but I'm not looking to get rich overnight. I'd just like to be sitting good in 20 years.

As far as which type of insurance I'd like to sell, that will be something I will have to research on. From my lack of knowledge, I really only thought about housing, auto, etc... But, that is only because I am not familiar with health insurance yet.

As far as support, I'm assuming you are referring to financial? I have always been good with money and will leave college debt free and a nest egg I've have been building over the last few years. If that doesn't cut it I've got a good banker and very supportive parents.
