Call 1-800-MEDICARE

Shouldn't he already have part A though, and opted out of part B. because of his age and creditable coverage?

I have tried in the past and not been successful. It is one more thing that Medicare doesn't explain or warn people about who do not take Medicare Part B when they first turn 65. They should apply for Medicare Part B several months before they want it to go into effect.

Unfortunately I believe he is just going to have to wait. I know, it sucks. I have never found a logical reason why Medicare does that.

I come across this situation a lot. I have a really good friend that works in the Social Security Department. He does Medicare enrollments. I can literally call a national number and they tell me so and so has to wait three months. I then call my friend at the SS office and he takes care of it right away. They qualify for a SEP election period if they are loosing credible coverage and have had coverage since their 65th birthday. If they have not had coverage since their 65th birthday that will kick them out and they have to wait until the OEP period for Part B Medicare. I had a 73 year old in the same situation and he told me the last week in Jan that he wanted a Feb 1st part B effective date and we were able to get if for him. Most people at Medicare and the Social Security office do not even know this rule. The best advice I can give is for the client to walk into the local Social Security office and give them a SEP form that is signed by their former employer. These forms usually do the trick. If anyone wants one of these forms just email me at [email protected]. I can email you one Monday morning.

It is a sad day that passes when one does not learn something new. I have only encountered that a few times since almost all of the people I contact already have a Med Supp.

That is extremely helpful information and should be in every agents briefcase who sells Med Supps. I will look forward to receiving a copy.

Thanks for sharing.

WOW! So that form will get them medicare for the next month effective date? My client is wanting an advantage plan so I will still be able to enroll him either way for OEP or SEP as long as it is this month?

In fact, this clients wife needs to be enrolled as well. Does she count as an SEP if she was on the same insurance but didnt work?

Shouldn't your FMO be able to help you with this?

The answer is of course "no" because it is almost impossible to find a good FMO.
