Has anyone used a predictive dialer for calls, how have you used them and what have been the results?

I often get these pre-recorded phone messages on my answering machine or voice mail when I don't pick-up the phone. Some are sales calls but others are appointment or pick-up reminders from doctors offices or pharmacies. What's been the experience with people using these in the insurance business, their strengths and the weaknesses, novel ways to use these in conjunction with "live" calls, and other experiences.
