Writing AARP MAPD tomorrow and the beneficiary is newly widowed. Her current medicare card has her husbands name and his medicare number. As of 1/1 she will be collecting under her name and social. What should I put on the application for the medicare claim number. I called Producer Help and they said try just putting her social with an A at the end?

No way her Medicare card has her husband's name on it. If it does, it's not her card.

Her Medicare number may very well be her husband's SS# followed by a B. It will stay that way if it is.

You got bad and uninformed advice from Porducer help.

You will need to call SS or Medicare while in the presense of the prospective enrollee. She can give them permission to give her Medicare # and the effective date of Part A and B. Also check the spelling of her name on the card. It's not that uncommon to run into a misspelled name on a Medicare card.

While you have them on the phone, order a new Medicare card.

Nice. They are advising you to try to enroll a client under a ficticious medicare number and advising you on how to make up the number. And because she says she is enrolling as of 1/1 lets make up the part A and part B effectivity dates too.

Screwy and dangerous. The support person helping you must be an illegal alien sharing some of his/her tricks with you.

I'm assuming what you meant was her Medicare card had he husbands social and most likely a B. Enroll her exactl as her card is at the time of enrolment if a change is made 01/01 then she and Medicare wil iron it out!

Do that; and call 800 Medicare... so call is recorded and get caller's name (Full Name and ID and state they're in) and document on application and in your records.(I would write down on application notes of issue and that you called so they see that too).. i actually did that before - different issue - but it worked and helped client.

You may wait a while on the phone but it's a good CYA and client can never fault you for taking every preventative option. Don't sweat it.. if there's a hick up.. it'll all work out at some point down the road.. just brief client 'hey, it's not a perfect system, so worst case scenario.. they Medicare.. will have to and will fix it if it breaks come 1/1/09.

Who knows, maybe you'll get a nice referral out of it since you went extra steps..and would I would ask for that at pt. of sale how much YOU HELP this way.
