Where Do I Start to Become an Insurance Agent?!?

Hello Everyone,

First Thank you all in advanced! I found this forum after searching the internet and have a lot of questions. I took my P&L class and received my license last year. I want to become an insurance agent but do not have a mentor or know where to start. I've been reading different articles to try and find out whats best. A lot good of things I've read are pointing to becoming independent insurance agent. So you can offer clients multiple quotes and product lines.

Can anyone one give me some good advice where I can begin my career as an insurance agent and what's the pro and cons. I'm trying to make a solid decision on what path to take. I just read about captive agents vs non captive agents. I'm really lost as to whats the best start.

When I took my P&L and life class I called my trainer for some advice and he pretty much told me he's not there to give guidance but to train. He told to go back to the person that sent me their. Well that's person was an AllState rep that sent me their in the first place. They tried to get me to become an agent but did not tell me about all their fee requirements and money upfront until after I took my classes. It was a lot of money I did not have. So I spent my own money to take the classes then come to find out that they wanted me to spend 20K+ for startup. I'm really seeking to get back in and become an agent. I need some good mentoring and direction.

Thank you!

TW

Why not talk to the local agencies in town and see who is hiring? If you don't have the money to start up an agency, work for an existing one for awhile and build up some cash and knowledge.

whats better direction to go with? becoming an indepent agent or going with a big company like farmers insurance or something....

Im independent and the first couple weeks earned 3x what some local guys would have paid me for the same work.

Independent is the way to go, I think.
