Ad in Yellow Pages

I have a buddy who used to sell YP advertising. Used to, because very few are buying ads any more.

There are some businesses that still do reasonably well with YP advertising which is why you will see their ads in prominent spots in the book.

Auto insurance, particularly SR-22 seem to do well along with the slip and fall attorneys like Ken "one call, that's all" Nugent. Fast food, like pizza and Chinese delivery do well. Plumbers, electricians and auto repair.

I don't know a lot of life insurance agents that advertise. Same goes for health insurance, but you will find ads in the book. My guess is most of those ads have run for years and no one ever bothered to see if they were paying off or not.

I was told if you want to run an ad you need to use one of the tombstone ads, at least business card size or bigger. You also need to run it for at least 3 years before deciding if you want to continue.

We have several YP books in the house, including the small neighborhood books. I can't say when I last used it, unless it was when the power went out and I couldn't access my computer.

The print has become so small the books are practically useless.

And if you do end up advertising make sure you set up a separate phone number just for the ad, be it a local number or 800, makes it much easier to track.

Me personally, I can't remember the last time I got the YP on my doorstep and didn't turn around and just stick it in the recycle bin. Most people, even seniors are becoming more PC and online friendly. Online would be a better direction I'd bet...

I did inquire about online YP ads a few months ago. Gave them Ed's number. Hope that wasn't a problem.

This is interesting as I actually interviewed myself with them about two years ago and part of the process was they asked me what types of companies would I view as the top 5 to " go after." As I went throught my thoughts, they gave me their top 5, Insurance was not in that list.....fyi.

Granted this was for the paper version, and as mentioned prior, online yellow pages is taking much of the business now.
In fact, we just got the new yellow pages books delivered to our office and they are the " New Eco-friendly size."

" New Eco-friendly size."

The Al Gore edition . . .

Smaller size, thinner paper, very tiny print. I keep the YP when it comes but the white pages are recycled. When I have to turn the lights on bright and hunt for a magnifying glass and straight edge to read it, just isn't worth it.
