I just ran numbers for 2014 FL ACA biz. A 53% reduction. Not going to work.

35 yr old.......no meds, no doctor.......no problem....compensated fairly.

60 yr old.......5 meds, 3 doctors......big problem.......bye bye.

This is year 2 and commissions have already tanked in this market, you have to wonder how low they will go before it ends.

It's pretty clear to me that in order to succeed long term in this niche you have to have a book of business of at least 300-400 clients and be wiling to cross sell other products either inside or outside of OEP.

I saw elsewhere on this forum that FFM broker certs went from 65,000 to 42,000 this year, it will probably drop another 30% by 2015 once these lowered commission rates show how tough it is to make a living.

You really need to think outside the box to do well in this market, I spent this morning putting together my approach and presentation and encourage all of you to carefully think through your business model in the next week.

I completely disagree. In the next week, anyone who sells indy health needs to get their head in the game. Its gametime!!!

Worry about long term strategic planning in March

How hard/easy I'd to get appointed directly with health insurance companies? I'm in Miami-Dade county in Florida. New to the game, just got the ACA certification and rushing to dive into this OEP. Had been approached by a company telling me they can help me get appointed through them but I would have to assign my commission to them and they will pay me a flat fee.... They also offer bringing some walk in clients... Does it smell fishy? I have some resources to go Indi however is only a week away and I'm not sure I would have enough time to get appointed on my own. Pleaseeee help!! Any word of advice will be greatly appreciated.

If you're new to this market, you NEED a GA or FMO to help you streamline the process.
I don't use Agent Pipeline (and don't know them), but here's an email they sent to me VERY recently:

Good morning, my name is Kathryn White and I am the Under 65 Rep for Texas through Agent Pipeline. I tried calling you today to talk a little about IMM and I know this is a very busy time of year so I wanted to just go ahead and send you an e-mail.

Who provides you with an unbiased approach to products available in your market? We do! Who assists you with the updates to your market, new carriers coming in—new information on special enrollment opportunities; suggests the best ways to assist your clients? We do! Who is your go to with each carrier? Or do you have one? One that could handle multi-state appointments and multi-carrier contacts? I could be that person.

I pride myself in growing agencies who are willing to give me an opportunity to earn their business.

Thank you so much for your time and I look forward to working with you. J

Worry about long term strategic planning in March

You missed my point, which was to review all of the available options for client presentations during this OEP and develop your own game plan for them.

It's not a long term plan, it's a strategy to both do the right thing for clients and maximize your own income this year.

I was really surprised by the Aetna compensation changes-I really expected them to lower commissions but keep the % of premium format. I can't make a living (and won't make it a focus) offering $500-$700 a month subsidy-based apps for $21 a month in commissions and not start receiving commissions for 5 months. I won't turn the business down but certainly won't pursue it either.

Instead, I will focus on my clients who are off exchange and aren't going to be happy with a skinny HMO or PPO network and make sure they get a plan that not only fills that need but offers the best overall coverage without breaking their budgets-in my thinking, that is an HSA plan with supplemental benefits (ironically, the same thinking I used in 2011 right after ACA was passed and our compensation was cut in half).

Aetna's plans/rates are available too. Looks like Quotit mistakenly published their Costco plans. I'm told agents can't sell those plans. Also, the Costco plans are slightly lower for identical or similar plans.
