'Almost Lost' Art of Copywriting - Salesmanship in Print

Does anyone in here study copywriting or 'salesmanship in print'?

What we've found is that a personal letter sent to a clean list of clients or prospects can work marvelously if written with the right techniques. I'd like to open discussion on this 'almost lost' art of getting people to call you with the desire to have you write their policy.

Just some real basics of Copywriting:

Creating a unique, compelling, benefit-driven headline
Starting with an engaging opening
Interest peaking body copy
Solid guarantees
Bonuses and offers presented in an irresistible way
Giving reasons to believe your offers
Using testimonials to build social proof and credibility
Giving a call to action with a deadline

Best,

beach broker - I still use the AIDA with some PSs's approach. I am an avid collector of copywriting material. I have some stuff that goes back to the early days of America when they used to use handbills, broadsides and ephemera. For some early day examples go to The Library of Congress and type in "handbills" in the search function. It'll give you a list of some good stuff. I'd give you the URL but for some reason when I type it in the forum sw kicks it back saying I have to have made at least 15 posts, which I've done. Hmmm, strange. Anyway check the site out.

There are a lot of good copywriters here on this forum .

With the economy weak as it is , in my opinion the businesses who improve their use of proven principles mentioned , will strengthen financially instead of stagnate (or worse).

Now Beach Broker,
if you'll let this subject go back to the 'almost lost' Art (I say Science) the winners will thank you (quietly of course).

It's supposed to be a secret after all.

My newest passion, can you suggest some of your favorite "study material"

Just bought several books from Joe Vitale in my quest. Did I waste 50 more bucks?

Joe is very good. What I like about him is that he keeps coming up with ancillary products to sell for himself. His well never seems to go dry. If you have time to surf the net go to google and type in "copywriting". You'll see everybody and his aunt and uncle selling "how to" books. Look at their sites to see the general format. Like everyone says, start a swipe file. If you drill down far enough in google and try some other search terms you;ll find sites with actual examples. It's been a while since i've done it but some of the best stuff I've found has been in the archives of some of these websites.

Snowman,

I went to the library of congress and found some of the coolest stuff on old copy. There is one link there to a report called the 7 deadly mistakes of advertising - it's a very worthy read. Lots of good stuff.

1manshow,

We've been studying the art (science) of copywriting for about a decade and it has literally changed the way we do business. It has completely turned the tables in our favor when dealing with clients and prospects. If I could go back - I would have dedicated all the money and time I spent on college to the 'secret' of copywriting instead. It has paid many, many more dividends than my years at the ole university.

Best,

Maybe that's why I've been so excited about my business in the last year. Growth is on the fast track and I'm an infant with the marketing and copywriting.....makes me even hungrier to see what can be accomplished.

Thanks for your insight
