(Career Decisions) I would like your advice.

First of all, let me start out by explaining my situation. A month after I flunked out of college I started my insurance career in late 2005. I began working for a well known Hispanic non-standard insurance agency/underwriter in Texas. They helped me obtain a Texas Limited Lines license in order to produce for them. In 2007 I was promoted to office manager. I left the company in order to fulfill my Marine Corps Reserve obligation and deployed to Iraq in 2008. Upon returning from Iraq I decided to take a second shot at college. I enrolled 'part time' at a junior college in order to go to school at night and continue as the office manager of the insurance agency. School was going well and I decided I In 2010 I volunteered to deploy overseas and I left the company for Afghanistan.

Since returning from Afghanistan I have decided to improve my overall position in life. I decided if I were to ever to seek employment with another insurance company, a Limited Lines license wouldn't cut it. I am not disgruntled or upset with the company I am with, I just have larger expectations for myself later in life. So I guess I am trying to say that I need to do what is best for me and my family's future.

This summer I studied for the Texas General Lines Property and Casualty License and passed my exam the first time with an 84. I have since begun studying for the Texas General Lines Life, Accident, and Health exam and I hope to pass by the end of summer.

I plan on going back to school part time this Fall and the following Spring. Eventually I will need to go to college full time in order to finish my 2 year upper-level business curriculum. I know for a fact that I will not be able to continue as a full time office manager and be able to focus properly on my studies at Texas Tech. There is also not another job position with the company that will work with me.

The first thing I am unsure abut is Insurance Licenses and qualifications. I was looking at the Texas Department of Insurance Licensing Bulletin and I noticed that the exam content outline for the Property and Casualty Exam is all covered on the Managing General Agent and an All Lines Adjuster exam. There is one section that is added to the Adjuster's exam called, "Adjusting Losses." Does anyone know where I can find this study material? Also, has anyone else made this same realization that the exams cover a bunch of the same material? I think it would be beneficial for me to go and take the Managing General Agent exam since the P&C stuff is still fresh on my mind from taking the test this past Monday. Also, I have never been an adjuster but would having an adjuster's license look appealing to an employer on a resume? Are there any Managing General Agents out there that noticed a bunch similarities in the exams that could give me advice on taking them?

I was wondering if I should go ahead and start looking for a part time position with another insurance company or go off and try and be an independent agent. I have have several job prospects but they all involve Life insurance and I am would rather have the license first before quitting my job on the chance that I might get the LAH license.

Are there any full time college students out there working in insurance part time? Also, does anyone know if having a MBA in Business Management is worth the effort when it comes to running your own agency?

First thank you for your service. You are a true 1%er.

Having an MBA is a huge plus. Wether you use it in a insurance career or not. Things change. Finish your education.

I have not done P&C in 20 years so I can not speak to that. Life Insurance is a product that could easily be sold part time. At least to the degree needed to match what you would make working part time in an insurance office. Your income needs as well as family obligations will of course factor in.

Maybe there is an opportunity within agency as a Life agent.

BTW, Props to your agency for working with you as you served our Country. Many companies do not.

If I can be of any help drop me an email.
I am a Devil Dog's Pop.
