I've got some friends that have nice boats who said they'd bring their business over to me as long as it didn't cost them anything. I'm starting with the one I spend a TON of time on and want to do things right for my buddy.

I'm doing Life and Health in a P&C shop, and as they are checking rates, its pretty obvious they dont know much about boats, (the CSR's, anyway, the owner has one) which has me a little worried.

My friend is with State Farm and is paying too much, I already know this, but want to make sure I'm getting him pointed in the right direction.

Has anybody written these things or have a good marine carrier I should get the P&C shop contracted with? I spend a lot of time on the lake in the summer and would L-O-V-E to make this a niche market for me. (I'm getting my P&C).

:1cute: <--my first emoticon here, but I thought a happy pirate was quite appropriate!

really?

Foremost
Safeco
Progressive

Google boat insurance, there are a ton of them, I remember one, thats all they do is boats, but i dont remember the name

Progressive didn't quote it because of the size. I dont know if they've gotten more competitive, but when I bought a runabout in '98, my auto insurer put me with Progressive and my monthly payment was more than my yearly was with West Marine. Mainly because Progressive pulled my driving record, and I had a lead foot when I was 26, but still.

That's why I'm checking to see if there are any boat specialty guys out there, the rates can vary a ton.

Its 88' long. Not really a normal boat quote, so I was seeing if anybody had any experience in insuring these things.

You'll need to contact a specialty company for that. Chubb has a yacht program that that might fall into, but i've never quoted a houseboat for.

Dont you love it when the posters give you the details after a number of comments!

THX for wasting our time. 88 feet make a HUGE difference.

Sorry, I assumed that 'houseboat' would give it away. I spend a lot of time on/around those things, so forget that its not common knowledge what size they are.

And that's why I was posting, its not a normal boat policy...

I'm on the L&H side now doing some research. Is Chubb and FMO type operation you could contract under? I dont know how the P&C side works and it wasnt clear on their website.

as I said before, GOOGLE houseboat insurance, you will find more than you need

You can get an appointment with Chubb, They do want you to commit to writing X amount of business, so I don't know if that would be a good option, and I'm not sure if they even do houseboats, so you probably want to call a current agent, and ask them.
