Auto-Owners Insurance ?

Is anyone here appointed with them and do you know what their appetites consist of.

I recently came accross a tuning garage that does work on Race Cars and high performance vehicles. They do Dyno testing and have even turboed small aircraft.

Now the owner tells me his agent has him through CNA and Auto-Owners. Being I am appointed with CNA, I know for a fact his type of operation is not within their appetite here in Utah, but what about Auto-Owners ?

It seems like everything I run into that I would normally need surplus lines coverage for particular risks they have written in the normal market with Auto-Owners...

Is this just a product of Agents concealing the true nature of the operation just to get a sale or is Auto-Owners really underwritting these risks ?

I represent auto-owners (in Florida which may be different) and came across a shop about a month ago that would occasionally install performance parts, they said absolutely not, won't even consider it. From experience, I would say they are pretty conservative.

It could be that the agents are concealing information, but it could be that the carriers have changed their appetites since it was written.

Here is your simpliest method, and I do this for any quote,

Send the U/W the website, let them look it over, and they will tell you yes or no,

But in this case, I would email the U/W the website, and let them reply to you, NO we wont do this, print it off and show to the owners of the shop, you just took that other agent out of the picture, and sale is complete right then and there.

You really arent bashing the agent, generally, his eyes will open wide and say oh crap, I am not covered? and then make your move!

Thanks rba... I could deinately do that and grab an email from my unerwritters at cna but half his coverage is with auto owners and I do not write for them so all I could do on that side is talk ?

In Michigan they have a wide range of commercial risks. They write a lot of commercial accts that most of the standard carriers won't write. They are big in Michigan with auto repair, contractors and new businesses.

that sounds more like it is in utah when it comes to auto owners. I have come accross refuse haulers, auto garages with loaner vehicles risks that are with Auto-owners. I guess I could always talk to one of their marketing reps to find out their appetites here. I find it really hard to believe they would write a garage that turbo's race cars, sponsores race cars, and even turbos the occasional small aircraft ?

To be honest I do and really have no problem placing it in the surplus market. No losses since 99 so why not?
