Barry Makes a Boo-Boo

If the man took off his shoes and walked on water, most of you would say he's moving too slow or has bad posture.

Another failure I'd like to point out is his repeated analogy concerning the post office vs FedEX & UPS. That is VERY misleading at best. Why? Because FedEx & UPS do not have regulations to uphold, nor is the government trying to force regulations upon those companies. BUT, government is going to slap the private ins companies with HUGE regulations to abide by, dictating how to run their business.

Look, it's a STACKED deck in favor of the government. How?
1. govt doesn't need capital reserves to pay claims
2. govt doesn't have to pay taxes, private companies do
3. govt doesn't have to account for payroll & costs, private companies do
4. govt gets to dictate what it pays providers(doctors & hospitals), private companies can not

"You can keep you private coverage if you like it". Yeah, for the first few years until the private companies slide into failure. That rhetoric is baloney.

The whole purpose of the public option is to crowd out & displace the private ins companies. How can they compete when the govt is like the referee & player in the same game? Answer, they can't.

That's MY "fact check" for the day!

Well..... it is true that his walking-on-water routine has come under a little criticism lately and could use some improvement.

I know! Let's have him create a war! That'll get his popularity moving again!

MOO not what we'd call a competitor for most.

MOO has been in the health insurance business longer than most and at one time were a major player in the major med biz behind BX. MOO started in 1909, Time in 1892.

The BCBS association didn't come along until the 1930's.

When I started in the health insurance industry MOO was a dominant player thank in part to Wild Kingdom and Marlin Perkins.

And before you ask, Marlin had white hair then so I did not know of him when he had dark hair.

When they pulled out of the market it was a shock. They had lost sight of their target and became an also-ran player in the major med industry. Still, it was totally unexpected when they withdrew from the market.

Other, smaller carriers (most of whose names escape me and you would not recognize either) have come and gone along the way. Seems like Philadelphia American (or something like that) was active at one time. So were Provident Mutual, MONY and Penn Mutual.

None are in the major med market any more and haven't been for years.

Aetna was big, then they got out, and now are back again.

Isn't there some kind of a guaranteed deal that people can go into in the event of that? The term escapes me.
Different than hippa? I.E less expensive but still guaranteed issue?

Nope.

A few states arranged to have carriers like Blue assume the risks but most states ignored the issue and left policyholders out to dry. 36 states (believe that number is right) have risk pools, others have GI or open enrollment but HIPAA has no impact on individual to individual coverage.

It seems a lot of posts over an Obama-bashing message have been about what is guaranteed issue and when it isn't (to where some agents seem to have trouble keeping up, let alone consumers); not all states having risk pools (if you're unemployed without income, how do you pay COBRA anyway? Oh yeah, there's a public subsidy now because of those **** socialists); how the insurance company can "rescind" something compared to when it's OK to just pull the plug on your coverage; what happens if you're hospitalized on the fourth Tuesday in April in an even-numbered year (is it a leap year?) --

...folks, that's why Med Supp had to be standardized to protect our seniors from "corporate confusion" in the early '90's. How about Part D next?

The insurance industry kicks, screams, and then begrudgingly protects consumers -- but only when their lobbyists can't buy enough votes.

They continue to prove that they need more regulation, not less.

I'm still trying to understand why so many practitioners defend such a corrupt industry. Not talking aout the products, but the industry itelf.

Is it some false sense of loyalty?

A wise man once said, "The road to the home office is paved with broken promises, fine print, and the bleached bones of their agents."

First, consumer confusion and conflicting regulations does not equal a corrupt industry.

Second, you are sadly mistaken if you think many do not want to see some reform in this industry. But change merely for the sake of change is dangerous.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing a number of standardized plans. Require the carriers to offer some selection of these plans, and have the ability to offer non-standardized plans as well.

That said, history has shown time and time again that too much regulation stiffles competition and is worse for the consumer.
