Can Allstate Agents Sell Other Insurance

I'm a long time employee benefits broker. I'm in the process of losing a large health client to an Allstate agent who is related to my client. I thought Allstate agents were captive.

Independent agencies can get appointments w/Allstate.

Interestingly this guy has a listing on Allstate but I can't find his name in the insurance commissioner's licensing. Can they do a dba and be licensed under a different name?

No clue about your state, but in Virginia all my individual appointments are listed under my name and all my agency appoinments are listed under the agency name. If he's the principal of the agency, he should be appointed with all the companies he's selling.

In Florida yes, most Allstate agents can sell other products, not sure in your state though.

Relatively speaking, the relative will get the business.

Don't sweat it to much. Go find a new client to replace it. Trying to find his Allstate appointment for a health policy on the DOI's website is a bit overboard in the dwelling on the problem side.
