I'm in California. One of my cars does not have current registration, it lapsed about 10 months ago. It hasn't been driven in two years. It was hit while parked. Can I file a claim with my insurance?
Re: Can I File a Claim on My Insurance if My Car is Not Registere
You probably can file a claim as long as the car is specifically listed on your policy. Generally auto policies cover all cars, whether they're on the policy or not, for liability issues. However, insurance companies only fix damaged (pay comp and collision claims) cars if they're specifically listed on your policy.
Contacting your insurance carrier is the only way to know for sure. However, if the damage is minimal you might not want to draw attention to your non-registered car.
Re: Can I File a Claim on My Insurance if My Car is Not Registere
The poster probably can if he/she has uninsured motorist coverage AND the car is listed on the policy AND insurance is willing to pay comp/collision claims on unregistered cars. UI motorist coverage, like regular comp and collision coverage, only covers comp and collision claims for vehicles listed on the policy, to my knowledge. It covers you for liability irrespective of the vehicle you're in.
I was an insurance agent for a few years and my guess is that the claim will be paid even if the car isn't registered as long as it's listed specifically on the policy.
But the poster will have to contact the insurance company no matter what thereby drawing attention to a problem with the car's registration. If the claim is likely to be $2000 bucks maybe it's worth it. If it's a $100, I'd get that car registered and forget about filing a claim.

Thanks for the replies. Very active forum.
Yes, the car is insured specifically. There's a lot of damage (someone crashed into the whole side of the car). I'll call my insurance company.
Re: Can I File a Claim on My Insurance if My Car is Not Registere
Insurance companies don't care about registration status. I've never seen one that even really bothers to check on this. The claim will be paid if it is otherwise eligible to be paid. The short answer here really is, unless the non-registration had something to do with the accident (and in reality, it can't), then it doesn't affect the claims process.
Now, the problem will come from having to file a police report. On there, you will state that the car was parked on the street, they may give you a fix-it ticket for having a non-registered car parked on the street. Probably not, but they could.
And in case someone else reads this thread and wonders, jlchan is wrong about his statement on liability. Any coverages are only extended to cars that are on the policy, if you own the car. If you don't own it and don't drive it on a regular basis, then liability may extend to non-listed cars.
Re: Can I File a Claim on My Insurance if My Car is Not Registere
Did you have full, operating coverage on the vehicle? And by coverage, did you have full coverage to drive the vehicle or did you suspend all coverages but comprehensive?
I'm asking specifically that question because some people say the car is covered and listed on the policy only to find a non-used vehicle had all other coverages suspended except comprehensive in order to save money or reduce loss risks by the agent. If this happened 10 months ago I'm sure you would remember but you would be surprised with people some days...
If it was comp only and everything else was suspended then the UM wouldn't work and I believe you would be in trouble. However, if you have the coverages on the vehicle then you should be okay.
Also, as an aside, if you're really worried about the registration on the vehicle, why don't you register it during the claim? I know people in the process of buying a vehicle and it changes ownership during a claim and the registration didn't affect anything. So at the worst, just register it and you should be okay.
