Can't Open

When I try to open some video links, I get the following message.

"Windows Media Player is unable to play the file because the correct video codec is not installed on your computer."

Does anyone know how I can correct this?

I just found out I don't have an authorized version of Windows 7 and I don't have the contact info. of the person I bought it from. When I try to download the codecs as was suggested, the download asks for verification. Since my installation can't be verified as authentic, is there still a way I can install the correct video codecs?
