College Age Children on Auto Policy

Hi,

Hoping that someone can tell me if there are guidelines on when children must leave a parent's policy and establish their own. We have a college age daughter who is nearing the end of her bachelor's degree, and will likely be moving to take a new job. She will be about an hour away, but it is in a neighboring state.

She has had internships and assignments that have had her living on her own a couple times, but just for a few months at a time. This will be a more continual thing, but since she may return to graduate school, I hesitate to say that it is permanent. Are there any rules or guidelines that would determine whether she can stay on our auto insurance, or will she need to start her own coverage with the new residence.

Thanks in advance for any advice or info you can offer.

Yes, there are rules and guidelines but you won't find them online because they are part of the insurance company's underwriting manual and those rules and guidelines may differ from one insurance company to another.

Is likely to require her to get her own insurance in her state.

Advise your agent NOW about what will likely happen when she graduates and takes a job in another state. That way you and she can be prepared for it.

Just a couple of questions are raised here. Who is the car titled to? If it is Mom and Dad's car some companies will allow you to show that one vehicle on the policy is garaged in a different state. If the car is titled to your daughter only it should not be on Mom and dad's policy at all. If Mom and dad's car you can usually do a paper transfer of ownership for not much money (gift the car) and she can start a new policy in her name only in the new state. Might save a ton of money
